Divorce would have been expensive in those days, it was not unusual for people to walk away from a marriage and remarry.  What evidence do you have of the pension that you mention he transferred back to England.

His service records note that he served until 6th May 1856 - he had rheumatism and Hemorrhoids on discharge.  Did Margaret remarry

This is William Dawson's signature from his army discharge record.

Unfortunately there's nothing to compare it with!

The marriage cert from the GRO is a handwritten copy, so that's no use for this purpose.
