Help with Name of Passenger List
« on: Monday 27 August 18 20:47 BST (UK) »
I was hoping a second set of eyes could make out the name of the contact section of a passenger list. My 2x GG was travelling from Ireland to Ellis Island in 1902. She was only 17 years of age. I can understand the address she is going to which was 40 Park Avenue in New York, but the first line I can only make out "sister" or "sisters" and the name I have looked at so many times, I have given up. Any help will greatly be appreciated by me and my family.

Thank you in advance,

Sisters Nellie Mary?

I'm sure about the Nellie part, but the second name or surname is indeed very difficult

Looking at it again, I'm now more positive about the second name being MARY with a long loop at the start of the M

There's not much writing in the clip you posted for comparison of letters,  but the 'N' in New York is different to the 'N' in the possible name 'Nellie' - though I have to agree that's what I thought of first.
Perhaps an 'L', and uncrossed 't's in the middle - making it 'Lettie'?
I'd agree the other name is Mary, and the first word is 'sisters' - The entry underneath also says 'sister'.
Is there anywhere on the page you can see what might be a capital 'L' to compare?
And a 'double t' in the middle of a word?

Despite the Ns being different, I agree with IgorStrav.  It's reasonably common to see letters formed in different way by the same hand.

I even do it myself  ;D

I agree with Igor and Gadget too - Sisters Nellie (and) Mary.  What an exciting and terrifying journey for a lone 17 year old to undertake!

Definitely: Sisters Nellie Mary; from both the writing and the Irish connection.

On this note, in a program recently about a woman who walked 1000+ miles with her daughters to New York they commented that the Irish were unusual in that young women often traveled to America alone.

One of the two sisters likely went first, sent money home for the second and so on.

BTW Another vote for Nellie and Mary

Thank you Siann.
These young Irish girls all suffered as many did from the famine effects. So young and brave to leave their parents and travel so far from home. Everyone is correct in their help as further research shows Julia had 2 sisters Ellen (Nellie and Mary) so now my journey continues thanks to such lovely, helpful people. Cheers🤗👍☘️
