SINGAPORE Records from World War 2
« on: Wednesday 10 August 05 23:06 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find details of a particular person born in Singapore during WW2, and I've been told that official records for births, deaths and marriages would have been destroyed during the Japanese occupation.

Does anyone know if it was actually the case that many birth and marriage details were destroyed? If so, would anyone have any suggestions to find out any more?

Thanks for any information

As far as I know, he was a British Subject and his father may have been a British soldier.

Hi kizmiaz!!

Do you happen to know the regiment of the father?
there should be a record of the marriage in the regiments papers -  Mack says he couldn't marry without the colonels permission - so there should be something there!! - thats if they were married - of course!

Find out what you can about the fathers service - post on the Armed Forces board - there's a lot of good people to help if they can!!

If you have pictures of the soldier in his uniform - post that too!!

Thanks Annie

I'll look into  that. I can't be certain of the name but I found a couple of possibilities on CWGC at some stage in the past, so I should be able to get a regiment.

If the marriage needed to be officially sanctioned by the colonel, would a note of any births as a result of that marriage be recorded in regimental papers? Or would the soldiers records have anything about this, such as extended leave being granted?

Hi kizmiaz

Casalguidi usually says :

Quote
there are a number of regimental & overseas bmd indexes at the Family Records Centre, London or they can be viewed online http://www.1837online.com (pay per view) in the overseas section.

there should be some reference to the children in regimental papers if there was a marriage - if not
I found these articles that might give you a few ideas!
