Chandler in Eynesbury - baptism c1796
« on: Friday 02 November 18 08:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi
If anyone has access to the baptism registers of Eynesbury could they do a quick lookup for me please?

I am looking for the baptism in about 1796 of Dinah Chandler, who is 55 in the 1851 census.
Hoping that the surname is correct as I worked it out from the birth of her son Alfred Johnson/Elliot in St Georges in 1840.
Cheers
Helen

I'm a little puzzled ( that's nothing new for me  ;D ;D )

If you are uncertain of the surname does this mean you do not have details of Dinah's marriage? (to Johnson/Elliot?)  This would be useful in proving her maiden name.

ADDED
I can't see any Alfred JOHNSON mmn CHANDLER births in 1838-on GRO
There are several London/Middx/Surrey births for Alfred JOHNSON in 1840 including:
Mar qtr 1840 Camberwell vol 4 p53 mmn NEW
Jun qtr 1840 St Pancras vol 1 p257 mmn MENSAL

The marriage for Dinah to Thomas Johnson should give information on her father

Marriage Sep qtr 1843
ELLIOTT    Dinah
JOHNSON    Thomas
St Neots    14   265

ADDED Do you have Alfreds birth certificate or are you just going from the GRO index

I wondered about this marriage.  If it is for the correct couple that means Dinah was previously married to Mr Elliot.  So this birth would fit:
Birth Jun qtr 1840 St George the Martyr, Southwark vol 4 p411 Alfred ELLIOT mmn CHANDLER.

I agree that the 1843 marriage cert is the way forward

I presume that this is Alfreds 'belated' baptism at Eaton Socon

Baptism 21 Jul 1845
Eaton Socon, Bedfordshire
Father Robert Elliott
Mother  Dinah

ADDED Baptised same day same parents
Maria Jane born c1834
Robert Charles born c1833

Hi
Yes all the info you have found appears to be correct. I worked out my supposed trail of events from my Bedfordshire Surnames CD and the entries on FindMyPast and FamilySearch.

The full story is a bit more involved than that as this Dinah appears to be a very married lady and as the story has so many steps to it I thought it best to try and get as much confirmation as possible.

The first step was to find on the CD that a Dinah Chandler, a spinster resident in Eynesbury, married in 1816 in Eaton Socon. FindMyPast confirmed that she had married a William Lee. The CD said that he was a bachelor when they married. Dinah appears to have had only one child with him, William in 1817 and then William the husband appears to die between 1817 and 1828 as the next entry found on CD is that Dinah Lee, widow married in 1828 in Eaton Socon. (the 1823 burial is a man born 1810!)

FindMyPast confirmed that she married Robert Elliott, which also confirmed Alfred’s baptism in 1845, (CD said he was a bachelor), and I then found on Family Search that she had at least 4 children by Robert, of which the youngest was Alfred. Again no evidence of death for the husband on my CD but I already knew from researching Alfred’s birth that Thomas Johnson had married Dinah Elliott in 1843 in St Neots. Presumably this was in a local register office as I cannot find a church marriage.

As you can see there are a few holes and it would make the story much more complete if the baptism was found.

I did see somewhere that someone had done an index for the parish, but I can't remember who, perhaps someone knows of it please?
Helen

Thanks for your efforts Margaret, so she wasn't baptised in Eynesbury. She must have lived most of her childhood there and thought that she was born there.

For that to happen she must have been born near there but she wasn't baptised in either Cambridgeshire or Bedfordshire as I have checked the CHFS index and my CD. For the moment I will rule out any other county as the parish is in the middle of the three counties - so that leaves Huntingdonshire.

Does anybody know of a county-wide index similar to the other counties, online? Or is the only source Genfair purchase or HFHS purchase?
