I can’t follow this thread.  :-\

How did we get from Henry to John?

Jamjar

We haven't really Jamjar. Just exploring whether there could be a link between Henry and this John, apart from sharing the same father's name of John.

I am not convinced there is really so far...

I think John, husband of Agnes Wakeham, died pre 1841. Family shows in St Leornard, Devon for 1841:

James B Rodier 25
Mary G Rodier 22
Ann Hopping 50...Ann is a common variant of Agnes
Agness Lus (?susan)Hopping 17
John Hopping 16

No sign of a Henry in that household to help further.

Monica

John and Rosetta had a daughter Agnes born and died same year as mother:

1849   HOPPING Agnes John HOPPING Rosetta LOYD Adelaide 2/145
1849   1/167 HOPPING Agnes John HOPPING (F) Adelaide
1849   1/171 HOPPING Rosetta John HOPPING (H) Adelaide

West Terrace Cemetery: HOPPING Rosetter 5-6-1849 aged 26 (location within cemetery unknown)

There’s a William HOPPING there, also, who died 30-1-1882 aged 73.

Hi Jamjar,
Yes that is William Hopping I referred to a couple of replies ago.
And yes that is the John and Rosetta Hopping who are recorded elsewhere as having arrived in SA "by 1949".  No connection with my gg grandfather Henry so far.

Hi,
My surname is Hopping and I'm from Port Lincoln South Australia. Henry Hopping and Catherine McInnes are my great great grandparents and they lived in Caltowie, South Australia. Henry Hopping died in 1910 in Caltowie. Here is a link to Henry Hopping's death record published in the newspaper: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/214048054?searchTerm=henry%20hopping

Henry Hopping and Catherine McInnes had three sons, John, Albert and Arthur. The grave of their son John Leslie Hopping (9th Australian Light Horse) can be viewed at Anzac Cove at Gallipoli where he died in 1915 https://alh-research.tripod.com/Light_Horse/index.blog/1813474/the-nek-the-massacre-of-the-turks/

Henry and Catherine also had Albert and Arthur Stewart Hopping https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/M5N1-S1K/arthur-stewart-hopping-1886-1959

Arthur Stewart Hopping is my great grandfather - he is the father of my grandfather, Cecil Sinclair Hopping from Port Lincoln.

Cecil Sinclair Hopping married Elsie May Jacobs https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/96617122 and had two sons, John and Robert Hopping in Port Lincoln.

Cec and Elsie's son John Leslie Hopping is my father now deceased (2017), and his younger brother, my uncle, Robert Hopping lives in Port Lincoln with his wife Betty Hopping.

Best wishes
Helen
