1844 Baptism, Magherafelt Catholic parish
« on: Saturday 03 November 18 18:22 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please tell me the word in the margin of the second baptism on this page? I think it is the townland of the parents.

The baptism reads [baptized] Elianor Mulholl[and] daughter of John and Mary McCormick, Witnesses Hugo Walls and Elinanor McGuckin.

I'm hoping that Elianor is a sibling of the OP's Patrick Mulholland in this thread:

Each word in the margin is written by a different hand, could it be that's the mark of the person who is signing off that it was done. Perhaps the priest or presiding official. Also the third word/name "Lekette(?)" is written by a left handed person, unlike the other text.

Just my two cents.

I can't see that the 3rd word was written by a left-handed person  :-\

I'm looking at the way the entire word is angled straight and starting point of the writing of the text. It looks like they're left handed, but the text leans right due to the way they had to sign it, which caused all the other words  in that area to be written completely at an angle. I could be wrong, but there are a lot of clues saying the person was left handed.

That being said. all the words in the margin are definitely in a different hand than that of the person who wrote the detailed text. Which seems to me like a secretary wrote the bulk of the text, and a person "made their mark" approving it.

Again, just my two cents on the matter.

Plenty of similar in registers if one just scrolls through pages

Thanks for that, hallmark- always better to see more details.

Wonder if it could be variations of Ballyrogan (BeleRogan, etc.).

Townlands in Derry that start with "Bal" and end with "gan"

Ballymaguigan    Baile Mhic Ghuigín    MacGuigan's homestead
Ballymulligan    Baile Uí Mhaoileagáin    O'Mulligan's homestead
Ballygan Upper    Baile gCeann or Liagain    homestead of the heads or pillar-stone
Ballylagan North    Baile an Lagáin    homestead of the hollow
Ballylagan South    Baile an Lagáin    homestead of the hollow
Ballydonegan    Baile Donagáin    Donegan's town
Ballyharigan
Ballymaclanigan
Ballyagan
Ballymadigan
Ballyrogan    Baile (Uí) Ruagáin    Rogan's homestead
Ballylagan    Baile an Lagáin    homestead of the hallow

Best match, as far as I can see is Ballylagan. But is that in Magherafelt Parish?

Click on each civil parish and it will give you a list of townlands

To find this list of Civil Parishes in each RC parish use the link to Irish Ancestors on the main page of each parish.
