Thanks all for the help, ouch though, 24.50 for the download, but it lists John Dimsey ( engineer ) and Caroline Williams as mother, 33 years old in 1933, from Ballarat , married at Albert Park

FALSE REGISTRATION OF BIRTH

It would appear this birth was registered in 1889 as Maud Jane Carol BELL, father as Harry Wm and mother as Carol Esther LEWIS (reg in Port Melbourne).

There are two more births to a Carol LEWIS - a Joseph Arthur LEWIS, father unknown, reg 1898 in Fitzroy South and Daisy Isabel LEWIS, father unknown, reg 1891 in Carlton Hospital.

It's possible that John's parents (Wm & Jane) offered to give the baby a good home without any formal adoption taking place. They may have changed the baby's birth name too.
