William John Phillips
« on: Tuesday 13 November 18 13:21 GMT (UK) »
I looking for information on William John Phillips  b 30 Mar 1823  He married Harriet Hughes on Apl--Jun 1855. She died in Jun 1896. I can find them on the 1891 Census for the Portsea area. He used the middle name John when he married but he was on most records just as William. Finding it difficult to find a death record. Any assistance greatly appreciated. Thank You

Thanks for that info on the 1891 census. William Phillips seems to disappear after that census. His wife Harriet died in 1896. The problem is that there are a lot of William Phillips! maybe somebody will come up with a way of finding the right guy.

She died in Jun 1896.

Do you know if she was a widow when she died?  If she was that would narrow down a death for William.

What about the granddaughter - she may have looked after him - where is she in 1901?

Also have you checked the 1891 address in 1901 to see who is living there.

I can't find him on the 1901 census thus suggesting he died between 1891 - 1901 but can't see an appropriate death in the Portsea area either.

Think you might have to follow his children through the censuses to see where they ended up and see if there is an appropriate death in the area in which they were located as its possible he went to live with one of the children after his wife died and his death was registered there.

This death in Mar 1908 age 85 fits age wise

William Phillips
Isle of Wight district

have you ruled that one out?  If we could find this person in 1901 it might help decide if it was yours or not.

I have applied for her death cert which will take a while to get as I am living at Gozo  (Malta)
Good idea about looking at the granddaughter's details. How do I look at the 1891 address on the 1901 census, never done that before!  Good stuff! Thanks!

If you have access to Find My Past you can search the censuses by either person or address.

The Isle of Wight idea was short lived, he seems to be living there in 1901 age 78 with wife Maria so don't think that death is yours :(
