Tierney
« on: Monday 12 November 18 22:59 GMT (UK) »
I've just discovered this website (I searched for Oswald Thomas Tierney and this came up) and this happens to be my family. There is a little more information here than I knew about Michael Tierney, however I was led to believe that he was from Coote Hill in Co Cavan. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be grateful!

Hello and welcome.

Your family are a different one to the one discussed in the thread, although they are mentioned, so I have asked a moderator to look and begin a new thread if necessary.

Just to make sure we are looking at the right family - Oswald Thomas will be the 3yr old Thomas in 1881 here, is that right?

Parents are here

On the census they are on two pages so FS has recorded them as such.

Hello Heywood,

Yes that's the one. Oswald Thomas was born in 1877. I have not been able to find any info about Michael Tierney prior to his arrival from Ireland. Any help would be appreciated regarding where to look in Irish records.

It is difficult. You need to know county and parish or townland.
In 1871 and 1881 he shows Ireland. Does he then die in 1886?
Do you have his marriage with his father’s name?

I found the marriage - it is mistranscribed in Liverpool Catholic records and is Latin but I have put the anglicised names.

6th September 1865 St Patrick’s Liverpool

Michael Tierney, Henderson Street
Son of James and Catherine
Margery Ellen Leyland of Gilbert Street  ???
Daughter of James and Jane

Witnesses James and Martha Hasleden College Street

Thank you so much. I have him as born in 1845 but I'm not sure when he died. His widow was remarried when their son died in WW1. I had also thought Michael and Margery were not married in a Catholic church. I will have another look at Michael's records this afternoon when I get back.  :)

Hi everyone,

I have read with interest everyone’s input on my original post ..

I have to say I am somewhat confused ..there are some names I recognise in your data posted.

I have always been confused and go around in circles on the Tierney and Ryan side of my family, my mother is no better at shedding light.

I have got to the 1851 English census and I think I have found Michael (J) Tierney DOB @1849 born Liverpool.  On the census form his father is Michael Tierney DOB @1808 born Ireland..

As I have mentioned I just seem to around in circles..
I do appologise if I have muddied the waters

Ryan - Liverpool
Tierney - Liverpool
Hearn - Suffolk, London, Midlands, West Lancashire. Liverpool.
Woodside - Liverpool, Midlands, Scotland, Wigtown.
Petersen/Peterson - Denmark, Hull, Liverpool
King - Hereford - Pencoyd, Monmouth
Harvey - Liverpool
Gray - Liverpool

Hello liver007

I think it is me who has confused everyone by commenting on your post  ::) We appear to be researching two different Tierney families, although both have a Michael Tierney in Liverpool at roughly the same time! The Michael Tierney I'm referring to moved to St Helens after he was married in Liverpool, but all births in his family registered after that would have shown Prescot as that was the registration district... It has been suggested to me that I start a new thread to avoid any further confusion  :) Good luck with your research!
