Occupation of Grocer
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 06:12 GMT (UK) »
Seeking assistance in trying to find the name of the grocers shop at 77 Nestfeild Street Durham. My GGrandfather has an occupation of grocer at the address of Nestfeild Street from 1875 to 1894.

The records I have are February 1877, his son is born there, with the certificate stating the location as Nestfeild Street, and his occupation as Grocer.

The 1881 census has him at 77 Nestfeild Street, and occupation as grocer.

The 1891 census is the same.

The 1894 Wheelers Directory, page 476 shows Thomas Bewick at that address, with occupation as Grocer etc.

I am wondering if the grocers shop was  in his own name, or if he was managing the shop for someone else.

If someone can tell me how to find out, I would be very grateful.

AC

Might be a silly question, but couldn't he, your GGrandfather, have sold the shop in the intervening three years?   :-\    (just asking! ;))

You could see if he is recorded in Kelly's Directory for 1890.  You can access via Historic Directories.(University of Leicester) - lots of directories there which are not on Ancestry. ( Was unable to check for you as you have not stated your ggrandfather's name - this directory is organised by surname not trade).

Just to note that he was in Darlington, Co. Durham rather than the City of Durham.

I see that by 1901 he was down as a retired grocer, living in Elton Parade, Darlington.

He could have rented the property or owned it. Maybe voting lists/newspaper adverts might be another source of info besides the directories.

William - name is given in first post.

Ah . . . .sorry AC, my question was silly.   I had supposed Thomas Bewick was NOT your GGgrandfather, and had taken over the shop.  My apologies.

I might be wrong as Thomas Bewick was at Westfield Street in 1891.

Will check out the address listings.

In 1901 No 77 was occupied by a Blacksmith and No 79 by  Simeon Barker, a grocer shopkeeper.

I've not yet found it on the 1891 by address.  Found - wrongly transcribed.
