William CUBBON
« on: Wednesday 05 December 18 12:47 GMT (UK) »
An ancestors brother, William Cubbon, was found guilty of forgery in the Isle of Man in 1847  and was transported on the HASHEMY in 1848 to Tasmania with a 10 year sentence.  Watching a programme yesterday it was mentioned that the locals wouldn’t let this ship disembark so the inmates were sent to South Australia with a ‘Ticket of Leave’
Is there anyway of finding out what happened to William Cubbon? Did he survive journey? Is there a copy of these tickets of leave?  Census for South Australia?
He left behind a wife and three daughters and can’t find that he returned.
Thanks

I'm sure the experts will be along soon , but in the meantime I found this record for William Cubbon

William Cubbon , tried at the Isle of Man Assizes 13 Jan 1847

Ten years Commutation - Forging a Deed

12 June 1849 - T of Leave 49/297 for Moreton Bay

Hired by Mr George Thorn of Ipswich at £18 per annum

Below this entry and crossed through

30 June 1851 ( possibly 7 ) Ticket of leave cancelled . Absent from District.

It appears that it was Sydney where the citizens did not want the convicts to land and  in William's case he went to Queensland , not South Australia. See this article on Trove :

Re the ship Hashemy

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01n4y/   24 page pdf

https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/series/12223  includes the following extract from the summary:
The "Hashemy" arrived in June 1849 following a revision in the penal system. Immediately there was very strong public protest in New South Wales. In spite of this agitation, most of the convicts were landed at Sydney (and sent to country areas), leaving 59 to be sent to Moreton Bay. All subsequent transports were instructed to proceed to that district.

This volume records the history of the individual convicts landed off the "Hashemy", noting tickets of leave, passports and pardons received, assignments, any later convictions, death etc.
