Is it possible he returned to Germany and emigrated again in 1857.

Hi,
I guess he could have returned and then arrived in SA at a later date, his naturalization papers though give his first arrival on the Gottengen which looks very close to the Victorian arrival on the Gollingen.

I guess the next step is to try to find the Poppe families arrival in SA. Or some record of their travels.

I don't think he arrived in South Australia at all.  Why would he give similar information on this document.

Jacob POPP arrived on the VICTORIA at Melbourne in 1854.  Wife Catherine and daughter Anna.  Entered on manifest as BOPP.

Family stories are often full or errors and assumptions.  John or Henry as he was known, emigrated in 1857 aged 20 years.  Was it possible he then travelled to Hahndorf as per family story?

I just found the source of our information on the arrival of john Henry Wortmann, it was taken from oral history told by his Grand daughter in 1987. It says they arrived about 1840 which we know is wrong, and settled at Germantown, Hahndorf is added later.
Given his naturalization papers have the name of the ship which he arrived in Melbourne aboard, I think the name 'Germantown' has thrown them off a bit.
Perhaps there was misunderstanding in the telling of the story because she goes on to says that the family traveled from Jindera, crossed the Murray River at Whyma and took up land at Bungil, which is just up the river from Granya.

Perhaps J H WORTMANN was first at Germantown VIC, now Grovedale near Geelong?

As an aside, my ancestors were at Hahndorf in 1841 and as far as I know it was never known as Germantown. The first settlers named the place after Captain Hahn their emigrant ship's captain.

Rhonda I agree with you.  I think Hahndorf was called Ambleside for a period too.

I did read that a number of emigrants were to work on the vines in the Geelong area.
