James Humphries and Elizabeth Broker (Booker)
« on: Monday 24 December 18 01:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for information or ideas of where I can go to get further information on the family of James Humphreys (Humphries) a bricklayer and his wife Elizabeth Broker/Booker.

I have the birth or baptism of four children
Sophia 9 May 1797 Gosport
Caroline 19 June 1799 Gosport. This is my ancestor. I have quite a bit of info on her
Francis 5 September 1802 Alverstoke
John 30 May 1805 Alverstoke.

Other than Caroline, I have not been able to track any of this family (Marriages / census /death)  and would appreciate some guidance. I live in New Zealand which makes research a little more difficult.

Merry Christmas everyone

25 sept 1798 there is a burial of a Sophia HUMPHRIS. At Gosport Holy Trinity No age by her name.

And

3 November 1839 Sophia HUMPHREYS age 61. St James St, at Portsmouth St Mary’s.  So if age correct, then too old. But age might not be correct.

There are 32 Elizabeth HUMPHRIES and variant burials.  And yet, I don’t see one that seems a possible death for your one.

James HUMPHRIS bur 9 jan 1806 gosport holy Trinity

Just to give me a little direction.

Can you please give some details for Caroline’s later life please. When, where and to whom married?
Where on 1841?

IF that 1806 burial is James
Then any of these MIGHT be a marriage of his widow

Elizabeth Humfris to Bartholomew RIORDAN. At Gosport Holy Trinity. 21 Jan 1807. (Doesn’t say if spinster or widowed.

Elizabeth Humphries , widow, to John WILSON of HM royal Marine Forces, widower,  at St Mary’s  Portsea.  28 April 1808.

Elizabeth Humphreys, widow, to George BENNETT of HMS Centaur.  1 Oct 1809, St Thomas Portsmouth.

Each of these Elizabeths signs with her mark.  Can possibly rule out the RIORDAN one as doesn’t say Widow ??

Added, you can’t place too much reliance on the different churches. I have Gosport and Alverstoke families too and they get married baptised and buried all over the jolly place.

Hi everyone

Thanks for all your replies. I will look at them after Christmas.

Here is the extra information on Caroline Humphries as requested.

Caroline Humphries married William Long on 8 February 1824 at St Mary's Newington, Surrey. He was a blacksmith at the docks in Woolwich which is where most of their children were born.

They lived
1841 living Charlton Next, Woolwich Blackheath, Arsenal Kent
1851 living 20 St Mary's St Woolwich Dockyard
1861 living  25 Coleman Street Woolwich Kent.
1871 living 35 Brewer Street, St Mary, Woolwich, Kent

Caroline died 23 March 1868 at 4 Glebe Pl, St Mary St, Woolwich, Kent, England
William died 30 September 1872 35 Brewer St Woolwich, Kent, England. They are both buried at Woolwich Cemetery.

The family were non conformist. All the children's baptisms were recorded according to the custom in use by Protestant Dissenters in the Register of Births kept at Dr William's Library, Red Cross Street, Cripplegate, London.

Hope this helps

Do you know who the niece Caroline ALLEN  with the LONGs in 1861 is?
8 yrs old so b c 1853.  Middlesex.

I don't see a MMN LONG birth so perhaps not Wiliam's sister's child.
I am hoping she is connected to Caroline HUMPHRIES ??

Thanks for your reply. I had found Caroline Allen before but have not been able to find her in another census or find a birth record so I do not know where she fits in.

Working through the Caroline ALLENs showing in GRO in county of Middlesex per Freebmd from Jun qtr 1852 to first half 1854 inclusive.

There are 7.
first  is

Births Jun 1852
ALLEN Caroline        Edmonton    3a   106   MMN is WILSON

Marriage for Henry George ALLEN to a Caroline WILSON is Sept 30th 1837 at Bethnal Green
fathers Samuel ALLEN a coal merchant and John George WILSON a Ship Broker
Witnesses John Samuel AMES and Thomas BLISS (?)

Caroline baptised July 7th 1852 parents Henry George and Caroline ALLEN
of Victoria Grove West. Occupation  Usher to the Court of Exchequer.

Anyway. If Caroline senior is the daughter of John George WILSON, is this the same John WILSON of HM Marines marrying the widowed Elizabeth HUMPHRIES in Gosport?

There is a 31 July 1812 baptism for a Caroline WILSON dau of John George and Elizabeth WILSON at Stepney.

PROBLEM 1.  = Caroline age 8 is with her parents and her older brother Henry S[amuel] ALLEN age 22 in 1861, when I’m hoping it is her with the LONGs in Woolwich. But other people have been recorded in two places at once in the same census.

PROBLEM 2. This would mean Caroline HUMPRHIES half sister was also named Caroline (WILSON)   Stranger things have happened in this game

Anyway, This is one of the potential Carolines. Only about another half dozen to track down!
