Another Markinch site you may find useful although it only lists burials from 1799 to 1854 is

www.markinchchurch.org.uk  then click on Genealogy

There are a number of Kilgour's there although later than your ones you are researching but you never know they may be connected.

Good luck

Thanks again. I’ve written Mr. Sharp and am awaiting a response. I will visit Burntisland in any event and search both cemeteries for John Kilgour’s grave. If he is buried Burntisland, it may be in one of the unknowns. I don’t think the family was a prominent one and any headstone would have been modest at best.

Joseph Kilgour was an only son, thus the direct lineage moved with him to America when he emigrated.

Falkland Palace is much older than 1820-ish. The present building is 16th and 17th century, but it was a castle belonging to the Earls of Fife in the 14th and 15th centuries.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

You are quite right, and I have edited the post to delete my bungling of history.
