Possibly something you know already, but the image for William's marriage to Jane is on FindMyPast. Possibly on leave from the army, he was a private in Notts and Derby Regiment at Welbeck Camp. He gave his grandfather's name, Alfred, as that of his father.
Jane, age 26 of Cheshire Road (as in 1939), gave her father as John Williams and the witnesses were David Humphrey Williams and Florence Williams.

Three children registered to a Burbidge/Williams in Doncaster not long after the marriage but presumably a different family - Winifred 1920, Mildred 1923 and Thomas 1926. I think the two girls married in Don Valley District.

Thanks David - more interesting information. Almost inevitable that William gave his grandfather's name as that of his father, as I'm pretty sure he was an illegitimate birth in 1893, and brought up by his maternal grandparents as one of their own children. His mother, Alice (for some reason i said Charlotte in my original message) married a Frederick Ingle in 1902, and moved to Cambridgeshire. with him, and had four Ingle children in fairly quick succession, but William stayed with his grandparents.
It may be that Alice's husband was never told that William was his wife's child, but who knows?

Hi. I believe he was in Leicester around 1954-56.

I cannot find any evidence online that your man served in the Merchant Navy between 1941 and 1972. That said, lots of these records have been lost or destroyed. Have you  anything else to go on. The name of a ship?

Sorry, no, I only found out about him yesterday.

I only know his name, and that he was in the merchant navy.

Never mind........
