“1939 indexes show a Norah Armstrong born 1879 living in Manchester - would she be your ancestor?”

I was not aware of the 1939 register until the you posted the above.

It is “my” Norah, no doubt at all despite the couple of discrepancies.

Her 1941 death certificate shows address as “3 Redburn Road”
The 1939 register says “5 Redburn Road”

Her dob is Feb 1879.
But, on all other English records her age back calculates to 1874.

It is my grandmother because of the proximity of the address in Redburn Road and because of the other household members.

There were 6 in the household but 3 are sealed.

My father is the Arthur mentioned, the Ann also shown was his first wife.

How was the 1939 register compiled?
Was it from a verbal statement or a written return from the people listed?
Either way, a 3 in the address could easily be misread as 5.

The 1879 birth is certainly an error as all other references to same person give us 1874! (bar the Irish record which gives 1872).

Tantalisingly close but still a, (now very small), doubt about Honora being Norah.

It is more the lack of any Irish evidence to the contrary that seals it, i.e. other similarly named births or a later marriage in that period and in that geographical area.

Some more information that clears up the apparent discrepancy between '3 Redburn Road' on the Death Certificate & '5 Redburn Road' on the 1939 Register.

Register says Norah lived at 5 Redburn Road

Death Certificate said she died at 3 Redburn Road

Informant on Death Cert. is Nora G Hamer - Daughter

1939 Register shows the occupant of 3 Redburn Road to be the very same Nora G Hamer.

So mother and married daughter lived next door to each other in 1939.

When mother dies she is resident with daughter so maybe being nursed?

How was the 1939 register compiled?
https://www.findmypast.co.uk/frequently-asked-questions/answer/what-is-the--register

It was then used as a resource by the NHS until 1991 when records were computerised. Until then, updates were made to women's names when they married or remarried.

The 1879 birth is certainly an error as all other references to same person give us 1874! (bar the Irish record which gives 1872)
1879 could easily have been a transcription error for 1874 [Norah's professed year of birth] if the register compiler copied from notes or sheets given by each household.

I did check the meaning of code '610' on the 1911 census.

It, unsurprisingly, translates to 'Wexford Resident' confirming the text on the census entry.

Quick update:

Just submitted Foreign Birth Registration application & paid online.
Got a web page up after payment stage complete which said one no longer needs to submit documents to London Embassy but send to new Central Unit in County Dublin.  Change since beginning of Feb.  Hope it means a quicker response!
