I think he was born George R Diston in JFM1924, possible later siblings.

I believe my grandfather George Robert Charlton 1824-1997 was born in morpeth workhouse in Northumberland, Also possibly one of his brothers.

There are 5 Charlton/Diston births registered Morpeth 1920-1930 but no George.

There are possible twins registered May 1925 - one has a name the other one has "Male" - might that be George?  See Free BMD birth index  :)

Ooh I will have to look into this as I have not come across twins in his siblings, he has went on and had 2 sets of twins himself tho!

Please bear in mind my earlier reply: the twin birth was in 1925. George's date of birth on the 1939 register is 1924

There is also the death of a 'Male' Charlton in the same quarter of 1925 in Morpeth RD, this is very likely the same child.

A bit of fiddling with the free index on the 1939 shows George R's month of birth was January, so this would fit.

But this birth was in Durham, not Morpeth, Northumberland. Maybe Ellen was away from home when he was born?

By the way Lisa, I can't find the marriage of Norman Charlton and Ellen Diston, can you enlighten me please?

I havenít found the marriage myself yet, it could be possible that he was born in Durham, from what Iíve been told Ellen spend time in workhouses.

I havenít found a suitable birth record for my grandad as of yet, thatís why I was looking for workhouse info... I only ever met him once or twice when I was little.
We have always known his birthday as 23rd jan 1924..

This 1924 birth in Durham is looking more and more likely.

The Durham Registrar's site shows that the middle name was Robert.

A 'workhouse' birth can very often actually mean that the child was born in the infirmary attached to a workhouse and not in the workhouse itself.

If it was me I'd definitely be getting that George R. Diston birth certificate.
