Pool of Nailstone
« on: Saturday 12 January 19 15:04 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I noticed some people on trees have Elizabeth Pool bapt 1785 Nailstone, dau of John Pool and Rebecca Fowkes as marrying a William Merriman/Marriman in 1803 Nailstone, Leic.

I'm under the illusion that Elizabeth Pool bapt 1785 Nailstone married John Sutton in 1810, St Margarets Leicester by License.
I also note than Richard Pool son of the aforesaid John and Rebecca was also living in St Margarets.

Elizabeth Pool of the parish of Barlestone aged 25yrs (Born 1785) and a spinster marries John Sutton of Barlestone, Butcher and Widower aged 44. (This John was previously married to Hannah Pool, daughter of John and Elizabeth Pool)
One of the Witnesses is a John Pool of Barlestone, Butcher. This is either Elizabeths brother or father I believe.

So on Marriage this Elizabeths birthdate is stated as 1785.
On 1841 census her birthdate is abt 1781
On 1851 census her birthdate is abt 1784 and her birthplace is listed as Nailstone.
On 1861 census her birthdate is 1783 and her birthplace is listed as Nailstone.
On her Burial her birthdate is given as 1786 aged 79 yrs old at death in 1863.

Seeing as she always lists her birthplace as Nailstone and her birthdate ranges from 1781-1786 and never going higher than that, Wouldnt it be most likely that this is the Elizabeth who was baptised 1785 Nailstone to John and Rebecca.
This would mean that John Sutton after the death of Hannah, married Hannahs neice, Elizabeth.

A Elizabeth Poole was bapt 1789 Nailstone, dau of Stephen and Elizabeth. Im not sure who this Elizabeth married but I dont think it was this Elizabeth who married John Sutton in 1810.
So begs the question who was the Elizabeth who married William Merriman? I doubt it was the Elizabeth bapt 1789 as if she was born close to baptism date as was normal she would be about 14yrs old in 1803.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Hello MrDudley
I have an interest in Rebecca Fowkes as in my tree she marries John Pool(e)  Rebecca was born 1753 Elmesthorpe daughter of John Fowke(s) & Ann Paull . Rebecca married John Pool 16th August 1775 Earls Shilton. The marriage is also shown in The Diary of Richard Fowke 1813.
I have found a copy of the Will of John Pool (John's father) b 1726 - 1802 and he names John Sutton as his son in law and executor to his will.  So this would have been while he was married to John's daughter Hannah

Hope this helps

Hello
I think we've spoken before about the Pool and Fowke families. I have Rebecca's line well traced and Rebecca and John appear on the Visitation Pedigree of the Cotton family. Rebecca being a Grt granddaughter of Bernard Cotton Esq of Dadlington Manor and Rebecca Halford of Wistow Hall.

My link is through this Elizabeth Pool born 1785 who marries John Sutton in 1810. All records seem to suggest that this Elizabeth daughter of John and Rebecca married John Sutton, her uncle by marriage.
Its just the marriage of Elizabeth Pool and William Merriman/Marriman in 1803 Barlestone is confusing, as im not sure who this is...Is this Elizabeth who was bapt 1785 or 1789?

29 November 1803, in Nailstone: William Merriman, of the parish of Stretton in Derby, and Elizabeth Pool OTP were married by banns. Witnesses Thomas Biggs and Mary Allin.

19 Nov 1810; John Sutton, age 44 and a widower of Barlestone, appied for a licence to marry Elizabeth Pool, age 25 and a spinster from Barlestone. I can't see the actual marriage register for this.

24 December 1810: John Sutton, widower, married Elizabeth Pool by banns at St Margarets; both were apparently OTP. Witnesses Richard Stringer and Wm Taylor. The banns were read for the 3 weeks before and state that both were OTP (St Margarets).

Does that get anything further forward? Probably not - sorry!

Thank you Annie.
I know that Elizabeth who was bapt 1785's brother Richard Pool was living in St Margarets in 1841 and I think he may have married there earlier.

All census and records concerning are pointing to Elizabeth 1785 who married John Sutton.
A John Pool, Butcher of Barlestone is a witness on the license so I think he is the father or brother of Elizabeth.

In the Will of John Pool  1802 Barleston   Elizabet's father he names John Sutton as his executrix and says John is his son in law. So yes I would say you are right in believing Elizabeth married John Sutton.

The John who's will is in 1802 is for the grandfather of Elizabeth born 1785 i believe.

John Sutton was married to Hannah Pool Aunt to Elizabeth and daughter of this John, then he married Elizabeth Pool in 1810 I think.
