Captain James Tomkinson Royal Navy
« on: Thursday 17 January 19 11:51 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the baptism of Captain James Tomkinson of the Royal Navy. His father was John Tomkinson of Knightley, Staffordshire. His siblings were Henry John, baptised 1787; Elizabeth, baptised 1788 and Thomas baptised 1701; all baptised in Aston upon Trent, Derbyshire.

James was made Lieutenant in 1805. I'm not sure what the minimum age for this promotion was then, but it would probably be a clue to his date of birth.

I'm also not sure which John of Knightley it was as there were several

I would appreciate suggestions.

Don

The baptisms of  Henry John 21 Jan 1787 ,  Elizabeth 24 Oct 1788,  and  Thomas  19 FEB 1791  on familysearch all give parents as John & Elizabeth at Aston on Trent, Derbyshire.

Where do you get the information that these are his siblings and his parents

I'm reposting this message as I've changed my email address.

I'm looking for the baptism of Captain James Tomkinson of the Royal Navy. He was the son of John Tomkinson of Knightley Hall, Staffordshire, and had three siblings: Henry John, bp. 1787; Elizabeth, bp. 1788, and Thomas, 1791. All baptised in Aston upon Trent, Derbyshire. James was made a lieutenant in 1805, which may be a clue to his date of birth, but I'm not sure of the minimum age of this promotion in the navy at the time. His father John died in Aston upon Trent in 1793, but I'm not sure of his date of birth.

I'd appreciate help.

Don

I'm grateful for the very helpful replies.

I had the information about James and his siblings from the will of his relative Mary Tomkinson:
Extract from will of Mary Tomkinson of Dilhorne 9 July 1810:
'The Real Estate left to her by her late brother John Tomkinson and all other Real Estate whatsoever to my relations James Tomkinson, a Captain in the navy, Henry Tomkinson of Birmingham, cooper and Thomas Tomkinson of (left blank) surgeon and apothecary, sons of John Tomkinson who died at Shardlow, their heirs and assigns as tenants in common and not joint tenants.'

The age of 56 at death is very helpful. The nearest baptism I can find is of James Tompkinson, baptised 13 Feb 1782 at Ellenhall, the son of John and Elizabeth. This could be him as Ellenhall is near Knightley, and the date could be consistent with an age of 56 at Death.

I have been unable to find a marriage record for his parents. There is a record of the marriage of John Tonks to Elizabeth Bailey in Castle Church, Stafford, 31 Dec 1780/1 Jan 1781, which I'm wondering could be this. Castle Church is quite near to Knightley, and other Gnossal Tomkinsons married Baileys.

His will states he has sisters Mary & Elizabeth so that may help. :)   There appear to be Tomkinsons in Dilhorne in the early 1700's

Thanks Rosie. I hadn't found John's will and would like to look at it. What was the date and where can I find it? I have the details of the Dilhorne Tomkinsons who are related to those of Gnossal and Knightly. Mary mentions John's family in her will of 1810.
