I think you could be right about the second word of second line being a place name, and maybe it starts with an 'L'?

Go with HD on the Gov Mm!
Gaunt, Ransom, McNally, Stanfield, Kimberley. (Tasmania)
Brown, Johnstone, Eskdale, Brand  (Dumfriesshire,  Scotland)
Booth, Bruerton, Deakin, Wilkes, Kimberley
(Warwicks, Staffords)
Gaunt (Yorks)
Percy, Dunning, Hyne, Grigg, Farley (Devon, UK)
Duncan (Fife, Devon), Hugh, Blee (Cornwall)
Green, Mansfield, (Herts)
Cavenaugh, Ransom (Middlesex)

Gemmanoon, was he a Parish Union officer from Manchester?  I am looking at an old newspapaer article and curious if it was him.

I don't think so? I'm not entirely sure what a Parish Union officer is, though. He was definitely a plumber and glazier, and seems to have come from a family of skilled tradesman.

It's also possibly Governor's MemorandumEardley-Wilmot (a Lieutenant-Governor) appears to have been in charge at the time.

The first word may end -sed, with a long-s.

ALTERED:

Not Eardley-Wilmot in NSW of course.  Pardon my error.

ADDED:

Sir George Gipps in NSW to 11 July 1846.

Gemmanoon, because you have the reference numbers for the Petition and other documents associated with your man, it may be possible to find them in the appropriate Archives.

Flipping through the images on Anc.  others with that added note definitely say either Altered
or Cancelled.   I can make out Altered to Sydney, and Altered to Pe(a)rth on another.

bbart - I think I'm going to go with altered, it seems to fit.

horsely - that's the hope!

Thank you all for your help with this; I am terrible at reading cursive and much appreciate your help. As I said, John seems to have been a character, and tracing his movements is certainly bringing him to life for me.

It's your choice, of course, but I would point out that while the second and third notes are Altered to..., and bbart has found other records which are Altered to..., the first note isn't to anything.

HI Horsely,

sorry I was referring to the cross-written piece, which I originally thought said "alleged".
