At that time it was not unusual for a widow to return to her maiden name, my own experience has also shown that young children were often "given" the names of subsequent husbands.

On the face of it there is a good possibility that the Christina you have found on later records is the same as the child born in 1831 but if in any doubt you need to try and eliminate the earlier child from enquiries either by tracking her down or by "killing" her off - not an easy thing to do when you are relying on church records only.

Have you checked out the death record for Christina McCallum to see who it says her parents are ?

Dooker, there were outbreaks of Cholera in Kintyre in the 1830's-1840's. Good site!

Thanks Falkyrn for reply.  I'll go further into the McCallum family to see what I find.  Also see if Peter Connor turns up.  Peter's birth was not found in Scot People.  Will keep digging.

Thanks Skoosh for reply.

Think the Cholera was most likely in Campbeltown where the Hamiltons lived as I had other families in Carradale who died of Cholera.  Thanks for that reminder.  I shall look at www.Kintyreforum.com.  Just getting back into doing research.

Dooker, certainly confusing details aren't they  :-\

From what you mentioned from 1861, the full entry doesn't quite connect to the details you have mentioned for Christina (McCallum/Hamilton):

Christina Mcaulay 34 Domestic Servant b. Campbeltown
Peter Conner 7 son b. Campbeltown

Address: Argyll Street, Campbeltown

For this Peter, with his birth being before 1855, there may not be any record from the old parish registers to be found.

Monica

Added: See you have him in 1891 as Peter McAuley Connor. That then fits better for 1861 doesn't it.

1861 Census by LDS had Peter b 1854, 7,at Campbeltown Scot People had no Peter only Samuel , 40, at Campbeltown.

Could be listed on the next page?

Where does 1911 Census state Peter Connor was born, it's usually more informative i.e. a given town in a given county which may help?

Was he illegitimate?
Maybe his middle name wasn't recorded & maybe only used later which has been known?

Annie

Crossed post, no alert.

Add, may have been registered McAuley & given his father's surname later which often happened?
