BDM Eskdalemuir - Confused!
« on: Sunday 27 January 19 02:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi, hope someone can help: Believe Robert Main m/Jannet Park 30 Mar 1751.  Famsch says Jannet Park born Eskdalemuir 1731 - her parents John Park/Jannet Hislop. Can’t find births or a marriage for John Park/Jannet Hislop .  Nearest birth is Jannet Hislop dau James Hislop/Bessie Watte bap Selkirk 13 Dec 1719. But this would make Jannet Hislop 12 years old when daughter Jannet Park born in 1731. Any help/suggestions appreciated.  Thanks, Maddison.

Did Jannet Park get married in Eskdalemuir or are you just assuming that's her baptism because the age fits? We're talking early 1700s Scottish parish records here - many Dumfriesshire parish records weren't even recorded until after this time. First of all, are you using Scotland's People or some other web site as your information source?

See https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=714261.0

SP has baptisms of five children of Robert Main and Janet Park: Lisabeth 1752, James 1754, Margaret 1755, Janet 1758, David 1767. It also has two marriages of Robert Mains in Dumfries-shire, one in 1751 and one in 1756, but neither gives the name of the bride! It would be not unreasonable to suppose that the one in 1751 is with Janet Park, but the original record doesn't say so.

SP also has a baptism of Jannet Park to John Park and Jannet Hislop in Eskdalemuir in 1731.

Again, it's not impossible that Janet Park, born 1731, is the one who married Robert Main in 1751. It is unusual, but not unheard of, for a woman to marry at 19 or 20.

But it isn't safe to make the assumption that it is the same one. The further back you go, the more gaps there are in the surviving records, and the greater the likelihood that the baptism or marriage you are looking for has simply not survived.

SP has no records of marriages between a Park and a Hislop. Unless they owned land, or left a will, the chances of finding out reliably who Janet Park's parents were, and anything more about them, are very close to zero.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks for your replies Lanercost and Forfarian.  I’ve been using Scotland’s People and Familysearch [Scotland Marriages, 1561-1910].

OPR Marriages, 1824/0020 0104 Eskadlemuir, Scotland, name Robert Main, 30 March 1751 - when Robert paid his one shilling proclamation fee. Very frustrating that the spouse isn’t named.

You’re right lanercost I seem to have taken it for granted that this is the correct Jannet Park.   So many named Janet Park – can’t work out which is correct one.  Have tried to find her record of her death - sometimes Scotlands People have name of parents, but not sure of her date of death.

Yes, both parents named on bap of their children 1752 to 1767 as Robert Main/Janet Park.

Forfarian Have been using Family Search and also checking with Scotland’s People.  Don’t think they were farmers believe Robert was a shepherd. So it may be another dead end!  Thanks for your interest.  Madison.
