How do you solve a problem about Maria?
« on: Friday 01 February 19 14:37 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the surname of Maria wife of Hugh Hughes & possible marriage for them. On the Census there are various DOB from 1803 to 1811 at Tre Eirias, Denbighshire & she lived most of her married life in Conway & Gyffin just outside Conway. She died 1886 & the estimated birth year was 1806. Hugh Hughes was born Conway 1801 Conway & was a Stone Mason.
Maria & Hugh's children were Margaret Born 1831, Thomas 1835, Anne 1836, Joseph 1838, Hugh 1843 all born Conwy & William born 1849 Gyffin.
Any help very gratefully received  :)

From Freebmd there are two registrations for Hugh Hughes in Conway District in 1843.  From GRO the mother's maiden name is Owens or Hughes.

For William Hughes in Conway District in 1849, there are three entries.  From GRO - Evans, Fowthes or Jones.

So, that didn't work, did it?   :'(
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi
Christening at Gyffin 16 July 1842 for Hugh Hughes s of Hugh and Maria stone mason Conway.
So it makes him Sep qtr 1842 and mother Jones

Wedding at LLandrillo Yn Rhos 15.9.1826 looks good
Hugh Hughes of Gryffyn and Maria Jones
wit Joseph Williams and Jane Bartley

Bapt Hugh senior perhaps at Gyffin 8.8.1799 s of Thomas and Margaret Hughes

Maria bapt at L y R to William and Jane Jones 30.8.1807 of Groosyn Eirias?

ps extra child baptised at Conway to Hugh and Maria-Thomas William 11.9.1829 and possible Mary 31.3.1833 but no occupation given and mother Mary not Maria.

Only two registrations in 1848 (Conway) - one in September quarter and one in December - mmn for both is Williams.  :-\

Maria bapt at L y R to William and Jane Jones 30.8.1807 of Groosyn Eirias?

Having had a look I make this Groes yn Eirias which according to this photos's caption is at the entrance to EiriasPark, Colwyn Bay      https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1757081

According to Genuki this area was in Llandrillo yn Rhos parish at the time in question (1807)
Note the township names in the parish include Eirias and Tre = township

Wow! thank you one & all  ;D
Ciderdrinker where would I find the info regarding Hugh Hughes mother's maiden name as Jones? Some very good leads for me there.
Excellent detective work Gwil so the marriage Ciderdrinker found could very well be the right one.
I can't get on to the GRO site this afternoon for some reason Bumblebee. I love that little girl in your photograph is she a relative?

Hello
The info on Hugh's mother being Jones is on the GRO site
www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Log in and there are indexes to search under Births with the mother's maiden name

Good Luck
