Thank you so much for your help Roger sounds as if you are right about Thomas in Ruthin Gaol. Please excuse my ignorance but where do I put  RG11/5522/80/16 to access the information, as I have been unable to find this info. It would certainly explain the age gap between children when looking at the 1891 Census but 2 of the children with Diana in the workhouse, Mary born 1876 & Thomas born 1878 aren't with them on the 1891 Census.

Which database do you use?Perhaps the easiest way for you is to put in the name and birth date for the relevant census together with Llanelian in the keyword box, ticked "exact".The relevsnt record should be obvious.

Use Ancestry. On the home page select the 1881 UK census(which is the RG11 bit)
At the bottom of the page which opens you will see individual country options.Choose the Wales option and this will allow you to enter Piece(5581)/Folio(16)/Page(4).Tick exact on all.You should see Dainah on the page.

Thank you Roger I have found him with your help. Your explanation with the Piece/Folio/page was very much appreciated, as I haven't used that before. My mistake was I had put DOB as 1850 were as the Census states 1853. Have you any hints in how to search for the actual trial results, as I would like to know what he was imprisoned for if possible?

I haven't found anything in the Criminal Registers database.Might be worth looking at Welsh Newspapers.
