Kendal workhouse lookup / records
« on: Sunday 03 February 19 11:09 GMT (UK) »
I contacted Kendal records office who are closed to enquires till March

From the 1891 census I know my relative (bartholomew Keenan born approx 1838) was in the workhouse.  I know he lived in Kendal from some time after 1881 & was in court in Kendal in 1890, till he died in 1901

I was asking for record look up, however they told me they have no records from that date.  I’m a bit confused by what it states on the website as to what’s there.  Plus I got a look up from them from 1901 a few years ago for some admissions data.

Has anyone actually looked at the records that could confirm what they hold?

Yes that’s the site I’ve been using and I’ve had records from 1901, so I’m confused by being told they don’t exist, I was wondering if anyone had seen them

In 1901 Bartholomew Keenan was living at Market Place, Kendal. He had his son and other family living with him.

His death is registered in the June qtr 1901 so he was probably admitted to the infirmary when he became terminally sick. Does his death certificate confirm that he died there.

There is a newspaper article Carlisle Journal 01 February 1861 which mentions a Bartholomew Keenan of Kendal being assaulted

He also assaulted his wife ....20 April 1877 - Carlisle Patriot

No he was only in there in 1891, by 1901 he was out and living at “home”.  I believe he was in court for larceny in the July of 1890 (Kendal court records) and sentenced to 3 months, which would mean release mid November, I’m thinking possible already on hard times and stole, even worse when he got out

Using "Kendal Workhouse" for a quick search of the CASCAT catalogue brings up the following:

http://archiveweb.cumbria.gov.uk/calmview/Overview.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog

Not sure if any of them are relevant but maybe a starting point for a reference for the info you want, if its there.  (You may have already checked it)

(Things must have improved for him, in the workhouse in 1891 and living on his own means by 1901!)
