Where did you see this on the Durham Record Office site? Or did you mean Durham Records online - which isn't connected to the DRO.

Marriage abstract shows that he was from Tanfield and she was from Lanchester

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-67T8-KF?i=104&wc=MLVD-PTP%3A165411101%2C165411102%2C165412401&cc=1840743

and the licence is here (though that is a LOT harder to read than the typewritten abstract)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6LD7-FRL?i=60&wc=M6KL-DMS%3A129217601%2C129217602&cc=1675690

Perhaps it was written in both the registers ? - though Durham Records Online say that the information is not from the original Tanfield register (which was so badly water damaged its unreadable) but from a pre 1841 extract

Hi Boo

The records seen were on Durhamrecordsonline - never think of familysearch for info re Licenses. I use familysearch all the time to look through BTs

Could the fact that he was from Tanfield and she from Lanchester explain the 2 different Churches listed for their nuptials?

Family Search has all sorts of good stuff if you firkle around enough. :-)

Could the fact that he was from Tanfield and she from Lanchester explain the 2 different Churches listed for their nuptials?

It may do, I don't have access to the original records so can't really say, but its a strong possibility.

Boo

I had come across a few of the double entries, and all were by licence. My initial reasoning was that the marriage took place in the bride's Parish but the service was conducted by groom's encumbent.
BUT... on a pro-forma register where blanks were to be filled in, there was a big clue to the answer. The pro-forma had - were married in this Church - and the groom's Parish register had the 'in this Church' crossed through, so my theory is that because there were no Banns published, and the marriage was in a different Parish, the groom's encumbent announced the marriage to his congregation and entered the details in his register. No wagging tongues in his Parish!!

On DRO website there is a note regarding the entry for Tanfield St Margaret which I would think was probably Roberts Parish. Maybe the difference in date was an error on Cuthbert Sharp's behalf. quote "[Note: this register was water-damaged beyond repair and is no longer extant, so this record is from Cuthbert Sharp's pre-1841 register extract held at the Durham Cathedral Library.]

The marriage bond is dated 11 August.

In regards to the Surtees/Ward marriage I was wondering if anybody else had spotted this marriage bond dated 16 Jul 1716 a marriage between John Walton, gentleman & Sarah Surties widow of Lanchester.

There is a burial for a Robert Surtis on the 08 Mar 1716 of Lanchester.
