Churchyard or Civil Cemetery - Blaydon
« on: Monday 04 February 19 20:11 GMT (UK) »
I have recently sourced a fair few burials via Family Search. The records are billed as "Blaydon Cemetery"

example here :
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSJ7-WSFN-P?i=653&cat=825173

I am confused (easily and often)
Though the format is what I'd expect from a civil cemetery, rather than a parish register, the printed page headers say " Register of burials in the burial ground of St Cuthberts, Stella, Blaydon on Tyne"

so I am left wondering if it was a civil cemetery or a churchyard.

If anyone can clarify I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Boo

Some Civil Cemeteries were given the name of the local Parish Church, for instance the Cemetery in Hexham is known as St Andrews, after the dedication of the Parish Church.

The front page of the register in question is headed Blaydon Urban District Council which to me implies that it must be the Civic Cemetery. There is also reference to burials being in 'consecrated' or 'unconsecrated' ground, which wouldn't be shown if it was a churchyard.

Durham Records Online also state that this is definitely Blaydon Cemetery. https://durhamrecordsonline.com/updates/2014/01/stella-st-cuthbert-burials-1873-1906/

Thanks JenB

That was my conclusion, but I am always happier if someone else comes to the same conclusion :-)

Sorry to correct you JenB, but you do find references to burials in both consecrated an unconsecrated ground in churchyards, I have seen them in the burial records myself. It was quite common when nonconformists were buried in a churchyard, also when the death occurred by the persons own hand. There was usually a section of the churchyard reserved for that purpose.

I take your point Jebber,

but the format of the register, plus what JenB pointed me to on Durham Records Online about these burials confirms that I am right in thinking this was the civil cemetery, though it was within the parish of St Cuthbert, Stella.

Jebber, you are right of course.

But in this case I believe it is a cemetery as opposed to a churchyard.

I wasn't making a comment on the burial in question, just clarifying that such remarks about  the ground can also be found in churchyard burials. :)

Are you looking for a specific burial in the cemetary?  I live in the area so if you pm me the details I can look for you.

Thanks , that's 'very' kind of you and much appreciated.

My Granda had, I have discovered, 86 cousins and a fair few of them are in this cemetery. The record images are on Family Search and I have  all of them that I needed. I'd be surprised if there are headstones though.
The query was just about my confusion over the page heading as I needed (and got) confirmation that it is in fact a civil cemetery.

Though if you are ever in Whickham St Mary Churchyard and have a camera to hand I do have another request which I need help with . . .

Though please don't make a special trip, just if you happen to be there anyway. Looking at the photo I have of the front of the stone, I get the feeling the back 'may' be obstructed by a hedge, which could be why the back hasn't been recorded on the gravestone photos site.
