Age confusion on census
« on: Tuesday 05 February 19 16:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi, i have recently been looking into my family history and have stumbled across something very confusing. I know peoples ages can be out by a few years etc but my grandads aunt Annie Florence Baker is listed as 3 in the 1901 census which is correct and then in the 1911 census she is listed as 14 and then that is crossed out and replaced with age 3?
does this mean she died at age 3 and they wanted to include her in 1911 census??

Welcome to rootschat

It looks to me like the person filling in the form was confused.  The one crossed out was obviously elsewhere perhaps the age 14 should have been against her name

She would have been 14 at the time and the children are all listed in age order...so dont think the age was meant for the other children

Whoops, sorry.

If there is no indication that any of the children have died on the form then we can only assume that her father made a mistake. I think that what he was trying to do was cross out the 4 in 14 and replace it with a 3 to make it 13.

I think it might be that only the 4 was  meant to be crossed out and maybe it should read 13.  Is there anything in  the 'children who have died'  column?

I agree he has most likely tried to alter 14 to 13. If I've got the right Brighton family, father George seems to have got in a terrible muddle with ages!

And welcome to Rootschat Sarah ;D
