Joseph Pears in Hunstanworth
« on: Wednesday 06 February 19 15:28 GMT (UK) »
I suspect that Ancestry may be missing some 1851 census records.  I am fairly sure of finding some Pears (b.1790 or 1832)  in the lead-mining parts of this district, but after progressively widening my search I cannot find anyone in Hunstanworth at all in 1851.  I would try FindMyPast, but my sub just expired, so I wonder if anyone here has any ideas?

Hunstanworth is on Ancestry but they have spelt it Hunstonworth.

Select the 1851 census, and then go to' Browse this Collection'  top right of the page.

Select Durham, then select 'Hunstonworth'. There is only one Enumeration District, number four. Click on that and you can browse the whole thing.

If you get stuck like that, its worth trying Family Search.

I put in surname as Pears
Search with a life event, selected Residence and ticked the box, next to that to make sure it searched for exactly that
year from 1851-1851
https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Apears~%20%2Bresidence_place%3Ahunstanworth%20%2Bresidence_year%3A1851-1851~&facetType=ON&residence_place0=9

short link

That is the result.

Click on the name and you'll see the census refs, go back to the badly transcribed offering and use the census refs to be able to see the images.

Many thanks to all.  That is certainly the right man, JJ.  He spent decades as a blacksmith at the lead mines in that district, then when the bottom fell out of the lead market about 1880 he turned to farming just east of Hexham.

Also interesting that his mother has remarried to a Hetherington by 1851.  I had got this from a surprisingly well researched Ances**y tree, but hadn't seen any direct evidence. (It was also interesting that it seems that he is his mother's only child after she had married at the age of about 44 - she may have had an earlier marriage, but I've found no sign of one).
