Thoughts on Joseph Miller and Sarah True of Hedgerley ?
« on: Saturday 09 February 19 17:14 GMT (UK) »
They say that a problem shared is a problem solved, so I thought I would share with Rootschatters.

On 1 May 1771 a bastardy bond for £40 was entered into between the overseers of Beaconsfield and:
Joseph Miller of Hedgerley, labourer
William Miller, of Langley Marish, victualler, and
Roger Pewsey, of Hedgerley, steward
In respect of Sarah True “now or late of the parish of Beaconsfield”, singlewoman with child by Joseph Miller.

Joseph Miller (bachelor) and Sarah True (spinster) married at Penn on 4 September 1774. Both “of this parish”

A Joseph and Sarah Miller had seven children baptised at Hedgerley from 12 Mar 1775 to 10 Oct 1790.

A Sarah Miller was buried at Hedgerley on 27 May 1810, aged 60.

Assuming these are the same couple:
1   I cannot find a Sarah True born in Bucks around 1750
2   I cannot find a baptism of the 1771 child
3   Why did they wait until 1774 to marry?
4   What is the relationship between Joseph and William Miller?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello Steve,

Well, blow me down !

All I can say is the Bucks transcripts on FindMyPast leave a lot to be desired. All I can see is an Ann Trew baptised in 1745 and Mary in 1752, both to Thomas and Mary.

That gives me something to work on.

Yes, that is the 1774 marriage.

I'm greatly obliged to you.

cheers
Steve

Sorry, what I meant is that the Sarah Trew baptism is not in Findmypast's offerings at all. Even if you search all baptisms in Penn for 1747 it does not show.

Sadly, FamilySearch is even flakier - one of those "I" batches.

I wondered about John Miller being a relative of Joseph, coming in from another parish. They were not baptised in Penn [I have listings from BucksFHS of all their Miller transcribed events as at 2014].

Thanks to Rootschatters responses on the handwriting thread https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=808448.0
I am now confirmed in my initial thoughts that William Miller was the parish clerk of Langley Marish (for 59 years according to his 1801 gravestone) and probably the landlord of the Red Lion http://www.langleyvillage.uk/red_lion_langley

William married Mary Jackson of Bray at Warfield, Berks on 23 January 1737/8.

They had a large family including a Joseph baptised at Langley on 7 January 1742. It would be nice to say this was the same Joseph who married Sarah True.
However, a Joseph Miller married Martha Marton at Langley on 9 April 1766. They had the following children:
Joseph    1 June 1766
Mary      27 June 1767
Jane      22 Jan 1768
William   9 Dec 1770
Elizabeth   8 Nov 1772

This could explain why Joseph did not marry Sarah until 1774 (although that marriage said he was a batchelor).

But – on 9 Jan 1775 along comes John s/o Joseph & Martha. And I cannot find a convenient burial taking Martha off the scene.

Any thoughts, please?
