So its quite the family mystery .... Ive been told that he said he had a huge row with his father when he was 16 and walked out and refused to talk about them. His wife did some research at some point and found a brother with a different surname but when William found out he was furious and wouldn't talk about it again. Apparently his father farmed somewhere around Redcar and he once told another family member about his early days in Scotland! His daughter surmised that the whole thing could've been made up and she wouldn't put it past him! Ive searched military records and can't find him that way either which seems strange given the period. Is there any other time birth details would need to be recorded that we could find? This is why I was asking about the address in Stockton Street - if that was a workhouse or a school I wondered if i could find more details from there. Thanks for all of your input x

I had a look on the 1901 census for 100 Stockton Street and there is just one occupant called John Elliott.  Born 1869 and occupation Holder up Shipyard.

Hope he wasn't holding up the whole shipyard!!  :o

I've just realised you were interested in 101 Stockton street and not 100.  I'll check again when FindMyPast lets me.

Added:  There is NO 101 Stockton Street on the 1901.  I'll check some of the other census records and see if it exists on those.

Thank you! I guess it was a lodging house then so no leads there. Wow! That is a lot of people staying there.

I have a hunch that he changed his name - what do you think of this? The birth date is exactly the same and its Glossop where he said he was from ....William Henry Cockayne

Cant attach as the file is too big but its the school admission document for 1891 in Duke of Norfolk School Junior Boys Glossop.
