He adds a wee flourish to the final  e. In the same way, the word under the sponsor's name is "ame". I'm not certain about this. "Friend" would be "amica" and I can't see "ame" being an abbreviation of this.
Perhaps it was ami. 3rd letter looks like e though.
Unless there was another sponsor whose name was James and the rest of his name has faded? (Just a thought.) Godfather's name was usually written before godmother's when there were 2 sponsors.
Another thought. Does "ame" or whatever it is, relate to the priest rather than the sponsor? Priest's surname is in sponsor column. Did he repeat "a me" after his name?
