That's a good idea, thanks louisa maud.
I've re-ordered with less information and have just phoned them, they were helpful but said the index numbers seemed to be wrong but to wait and see if this new order is successful, if not to ring back.
But I think I will get in touch with the Folkestone office.
Thank you everyone for helping.

Can you expand on that a bit, can you supply the same info i.e. vol, page no., district names, dates etc. and get a cert from a local register office for the same price as the GRO?

On the occasion it was re-issued s from ONS, but I have ordered certificates directly from the register office, at the time they were about the same price as ONS charged , sometimes plus postage but I got what I wanted

No, I didn't sent the ONS reference numbers, just gave them as much info as I had at the time, year, quarter and the names and sometimes addresses if I had them,  in all cases I was confident I would get the right cert and I did

I don't know how much the charge is now but it is always worth a phone call

No, you can’t use the GRO reference numbers when applying to a local register office, they all have their own separate systems of reference numbers.

I didn't give any reference numbers at all, I was  aware they use their own system, just gave as much information as I had and in most cases more information than ONS asks for and got a certificate by return, in one case, years ago, they actually told me the details over the phone and I still ordered the certificate

An exception is Birmingham RO, who do use the GRO references.

Perhaps I didn't make it clear that I was replying to the question posed by melba_schmelba.
