Sarah Whittingham b 1863 Brewood
« on: Thursday 14 February 19 21:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I wonder if someone might be able to help me please with a baptism/christening and a marriage for Sarah Whittingham. She was born in Brewood around 1863.
I think she was illegitimate as her birth was registered with our a mother's Maiden name (Dec q, Penkridge, Vol 0613,pg 346).
In 1884 she married Joseph Haywood in CANNOCK.
I was hoping a mother might be named in  a baptism /christening or that there might be some indication as to Sarah's parentage from her marriage.

Additional info, not in 1871 census.
1881 servant class rg11, piece 2786,folio 37, pg 3
1891 class rg12, piece 2250,folio 85, pg 16
1901 class rg13, piece 2659, folio 14, pg 19.
1911 class rg14, piece 28130.
Death Don Valley, York. 6 children.

Possible mothers include daughters of Mary and George Whittingham from Brewood, including Sarah 1831 and Francis/fanny b 1841.

Mary and George's family appear to be the only Whittingham family in Brewood at the time with daughters the right age to be the mother of Sarah. Older Sarah is a servant in 1851 and then she vanishes, Fanny is a servant in 1861 and like Sarah the younger, is not visable in 1871.

Thanks in advance,
Best wishes Emma

As you have the birth registration I would get the certificate to find out who her mother was.

Hi
Sarah Ann Whittingham senior born 31 Jan 1853  is the illegitimate daughter of Eliza Whittingham born 1833 bapt 28 May 1833 d of George and Mary Whittingham labourer.
So a birth for Sarah junior in Dec 1863 would really be pushing it.

Siblings for Eliza/Children George and Mary

Elizabeth born 20 Sep 1828 bapt 28 Nov 1834 buried 28.11.1834
Sarah bapt 23.3.1831
Eliza 1833  daughter Sarah Ann 1853
Charles 24 May 1835 died 12 Sep 1835
Ann 31 July 1836  daughters  Maria 23.4.1854-25.10.1854 and Mary 7.11.1859-19.1.1860 . Son Thomas Henry 6.10./17.9.1861-5.5.1894 Lapley .She married at Wolverhampton St John  22 Dec 1861 to Thomas Thomas
Mary bapt 25.12.1838 married John Pool 7.4.1862 at Lapley

John 12/19 Dec 1842
Jane bapt 24.4.1845 born 15th .Buried 28.6.1845

The ones in bold could be Sarah's mother.

Thank you very much for this, this didn't come up on my initial searches. I am interested in the Sarah who is 7 (although the enumerator took her name down as Whittington) as she is boarding with the Wrights. The Sarah Ann born around 1853 could be an aunt.

Thank you very much for this, it seems like quite a few of George's and Mary's daughters were servants who did not marry. George died in a workhouse.
Thanks also for the info re Fanny, perhaps if she is the mother (as some people on ancestry seem to think) it explains why she couldn't raise her daughter.

Hi, that is fantastic, thank you so much and for all of the detail, there are certainly some clear options for parentage and the fact that there are other illegitimate children in the family makes it a possibility.
