Stuck researching Mary Owen of Trefriw
« on: Friday 15 February 19 12:39 GMT (UK) »
Bore da folks!
I'm new here, and hoping someone with local knowledge of Trefriw can help me :)
I know my great grandmother Elizabeth Mary Owen was born in 1886 in Trefriw and married Thomas Roberts of Efenechtyd in 1909. Her address at the time of her marriage was "Tai Isaf, Tal-y-bont, Caerhun" her father's name was not given on her marriage cert (possibly illegitimate).
Her mother must have stayed in Tal-y-bont because the children called her Nain Tal-y-bont.
Somebody was able to access a baptismal record they believe was Elizabeth Mary's, giving her baptism as being 7/5/1886 daughter of Mary Owen (no father named) address Ty Ucha, Trefriw.
I actually have a picture of Mary! And I would love to know more about her.
If anyone can help I would be so grateful :)
Diolch yn fawr

Hello ciderdrinker, and thank you!
You put some serious thought and time into that reply.
I had spotted that 1891 census before myself and wasn't convinced it was them. I know mistakes can be made by the census-takers but I thought that listing the surname as Owens instead of Owen was a big one. I'm sure in those rural areas they would have been quite particular about which surname (There are Clarks in my family who get very agitated about being given an "e" at the end of their name  ;D ) Also they gave the place of birth for little Elizabeth Mary as Caerhun, when in fact my Elizabeth Mary was most definitely born in Trefriw.

I agree with you about the interesting census entry for 1881. I think that the 17 year old Mary Owen who was servant to the Calvinistic minister Evan Davies may well be my great great grandmother. It seems he stayed in Trefriw until his death. But Mary had her illegitimate daughter 5 years later.

I might see if I can find Evan Davies in 1891 to make sure that Mary is not still with him.

Thank you again for your time and effort!
:)

I'd read the name of the abode in 1891 as Wernddeugau - which makes sense in Welsh, unlike to suggestion above (literally two fields marsh)
