:) Hi again, throwing in a Robert Potts who who ended up a Blacksmith in Durham area c 1970 does not help me, I am only interested in the Davison and Potts families in c1841/1911

OK, sorry, but he comes from a line of blacksmiths in the area and I am hoping that his family will have a bit of historic information that might be helpful

:) Ok I am now working from this 1861 census:-

Rachael Davison 75 Widow occ Publican
Robert 41 occ Publican
Elizabeth 20 Grandaughter occ Bar Maid
Jacob 17 Grandson occ Carter
George 14
Residing Four Lane Ends
Census ref RG09/3732/98/2
Believe "Jacob" was registered prior to the marriage of Jacob Davison to Mary Potts as Nicholas Potts no mmn
Their are two marriages 1869 and 1874 for a Nicholas Potts in Durham, but cannot locate who to and where he was 1871 or 1881?

If Rachael Davison was a Publican in 1861 did Elizabeth run a different pub?
If her pub was in Castleside it was beside a Morrows Row a group of 3 households ?

Never heard of that place (Morrows Row) but I will contact some friends and ask around.  As far as I know, the only other pub was the Smelters Arms but that is in the main street.  I will get back to you ASAP

I have had one immediate answer that may or may not be helpful.  There was a very short row of 3 or 4 houses named Murrays Row situated at the end of the village of Castleside and this is a very short distance (2 minutes walk) from a pub named the Fleece which is just inside the border of Healeyfield

I have just learned that The Smelters Arms was originally in different, smaller, premises but moved to a bigger building sometime in the late 1800s.  The original Smelters Arms was literally across the road from the Murrays Row mentioned in my last message.  Sorry to drip feed information but I am giving it to you as fast as I get it.

You have hit the nail squarely on the head!  Someone has just sent me an old press clipping about an inquest held at Mrs Davisons House - The Smelters Arms.  So she did have another pub!  There is no date on the cutting but I have emailed him to ask whether he has a date for it.

:) So which pub did Elizabeth and Eleanor/Ellen Potts run in Castleside.
A look at the original 1861 for them could provide clues?
