Thank you Louisa Maud - the 1851 census looks interesting.
I have ordered birth certs for Charles Taylor and Helena Frobisher.
I am also still confused about Hannah (b.1820).  Was she a Frobisher that became a Taylor and then an Oxtoby, but her marriage cert attached implies she was always a Taylor before marrying William Oxtoby.

Yes, it is puzzling.

I also see this, which may or may not be a red herring:

11 Jan 1847

Charles Frederick Veith Taylor, born 21 Sep 1843, son of Frederick (merchant) & Mary, of Myton.

At the moment I am finding Hannah the mystery one, (born circa 1821), as Hannah Frobisher on 1851 she is showing as a widow, can' find anything else as yet.

Although on some census she has shown she was born in Lockwood  on 1851 states Southowran, I have no idea where this is

Please let us know how you get on the the info on the certs teach3r

It does make me wonder if the incumbent made a mistake, we may never know but hopefully the certs will reveal more

Thank you for your help Louisa Maud - southowran is about 7 miles north of Lockwood.
Will add more details once I have the certificates.

Update:
I have now received the birth certs for Charles Frederic Taylor and for Hannah Frobisher.

Charles was born at 12 Garden Street, Myton, Kingston upon Hull on 15th 20th Sept 1843 to John Taylor (mariner) and Mary Taylor, formerly Furbishaw.  The informant was Boletta(?) Smith also of 12 Garden Street.

Helena was born at Buxton Road, Lockwood, Yorkshire on 17 July 1846 to Fretchfield Frobisher (cordwainer) and Ann Frobisher, formerly Wooffenden.  The informant was Fretchield Frobisher.

This has made things even more confusing as I had thought that as William Oxtoby was married to Hannah and Charles F Taylor was down as stepson he would be Hannah's son.  However, the birth cert shows his mother as Mary Taylor (nee Furbishaw).  This implies that there is no relationship between Hannah and Charles but Hannah's surname and her father's name on her marriage cert to William Oxtoby is Taylor.  avm228 also pointed out that in 1881 Hannah Oxtoby is living with Charles and is down as his mother.

I have been exploring the idea that Charles' father John my have been the brother of Hannah and she 'adopted' Charles but I haven't got anything concrete for that.
