Help needed - placename - pys coch?
« on: Tuesday 19 February 19 12:06 GMT (UK) »
I am really hoping someone can help me with this place name as I have been going round in circles for almost 15 years trying to locate these particular Morgans.

Timothy was my GGG grandfather who married Hannah Lott in Abergavenny. Parents Thomas Morgan and Mary Dew. He was born in Abergavenny and baptised in the parish of Llandewy-Skirrid. He can be found on further census records in Sirhowy before moving with his family to Pontycymmer.

I have never been able to find a marriage for his parents so I am hoping that going back over possible records I can find clues.

TIA!

Pyscoch(as transcribed) appears in the 1841 census with a Morgan family resident.Neighbouring properties on that census are Skirrid Farm and Pentre Farm which I can locate on old maps, but not yet Pyscoch.

The family of William Morgan continue to live there until at least 1881,the name being rendered variously as Post Coch,Typoch etc.Taking a look at surrounding properties on all censuses,I would say the most likely is Pen y Ffos Goch by Crossway Cottage approx postcode NP7 8AW.

Many thanks Roger, that is really helpful.

In the parish records I see a fair few entries for William and wife Martha although I haven't yet been able to link these to my Thomas or Timothy.

I shall take a good look at what you have found, thank you!

I have tried to link them but also failed so far.I did wonder whether the variant names as transcribed were all abbreviations of the cumbersome Pen y Ffos Goch i.e PyFGoch?
I will try to see if here are other births with that abode, and,if so,which family group they belong to.

Roger

Actually on the very same image as Timothy, albeit the previous page of the register is Sarah, daughter of William and Anne,Pyscoch,1836,consistent with the 1841 census.

Ann(e),the wife of William and mother of Sarah dies at "Pyscoch" in March1838 aged 45.William re marries in 1839 to a Martha Geap, and it is she who appears in the 1841 and subsequent censuses. So were Thomas and Mary visiting William following the death of Anne.when Timothy was born there?Baptism record is for November 1838.

That is really helpful information thank you.

I have wondered a few times why Timothy would have gone back that area to get married when his parents and wife's family were over by Bedwellty. It would make sense that if they had family there.

I finally feel like I am making progress, thanks!
