Frederick WHERRITT Victoria 1841
« on: Tuesday 19 February 19 21:20 GMT (UK) »
Frederick Wherritt's obituary in Vic. in 1907 states that he arrived on 'Duchess of Argyle' in 1841.  He was born in Chatham, Kent in 1819.  He married in 1839 and his daughter was born in 1840. He
travelled to Aust. alone, confirmed by poorhouse records for wife Sarah in UK.  There are no PROV records of his arrival as an assisted immigrant and unassisted passenger lists are from 1850's.
He married in 1852 in NSW where he remained until abt. 1880 when he returned to Victoria.  His
death cert. states " 38 years in NSW and Qld. and 27 years Vic."  There are no immigration records for him at NSW State Records.

Would like to confirm his arrival on Duchess of Argyle, looking for help with this.  Trove has a report
from Geelong Advertiser, 17th April 1841 for the arrival of the barque "Argyle" from Liverpool, this is possibly a different ship.  The only reference to "Duchess of Argyle" on Trove is in 1842 to N.Z.
from Scotland.

Have all the family information for him, just looking for confirmation of his arrival.
All help appreciated.

Regards,
Jen.

On a recent thread there’s mention of both vessels named Argyle arriving in 1841 at Port Phillip,

1st March 1841
http://indexes.records.nsw.gov.au/ebook/list.aspx?Page=NRS5316/4_4813/Argyle%20[1]_1%20Mar%201841/4_481300115.jpg&No=1

and

12th April 1841
http://indexes.records.nsw.gov.au/ebook/list.aspx?Page=NRS5316/4_4813/Argyle%20[2]_12%20Apr%201841/4_481300136.jpg&No=1

There was also the Duchess of Northumberland (3 June 1841) for Port Phillip.
http://indexes.records.nsw.gov.au/ebook/list.aspx?Page=NRS5316/4_4813/Duchess%20of%20Northumberland_3%20Jun%201841/4_481300146.jpg&No=1   There’s something a tad ‘odd’ about this vessel’s passenger list – the pages may be ‘out of sequence’  … Unmarried Males are at pages 4, 5, 6, 8   (page 7 is the Unmarried Females)

1841 arrival …. The NSW Archives online index for Unassisted Arrivals NSW is for 1842-1855 ….  And likely you have gone through all their indexes at the following :
https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/collections-and-research/guides-and-indexes/immigration-and-shipping/indexes

Likely also you have tried under variations of the surname … WHERRITT …  Those ‘r’ could be mis-read as ‘n’ or as ‘m’ or ‘o u’ etc and the ‘t t’  as ‘l l’ and the ‘i’ as any of the vowels … and then there’s the ‘Wh’ those woubble-yews get themselves into all sorts of bother ….

Anyway, perhaps the enquirer on the other thread may have some info to share with you as to where they have researched for their ‘Argyle’ ship of arrival into Port Phillip in 1841.

Hi Jack,  Most likely no connection, consistently spelled Wherritt on all certs.

arrival: barque Argyle
Master:   Rattray
Origin:   Liverpool   1840 Nov 7
Destination:   Sydney   1841 May 21 (dep Port Phillip 10 May 1841) 255-74 immigrants.
www.blaxland.com/ozships
www.portphillipdistrict.info/Liverpool_Passenger_Lists_1839-51_017.htm
Whilst this doesn't really add any new info, there will be a full list of passengers somewhere that were used by these 2 sources.

Shume, Thankyou for the 2 links will check those for possible leads.  The obit. indicated that the
ship of arrival was Duchess of Argyle, but the March and April 1841 arrival lists record only
             "Argyle".

I would be cautious about info in an obituary.. its really what the family remembers and could be confusion about the ships name. I am curious to know why he left his wife and ch in the workhouse and organised a fare for himself. Did he travel under a different name perhaps?
