Rowleys of Stourport/Lower Mitton
« on: Tuesday 19 February 19 21:35 GMT (UK) »
I am finding it difficult to sort these family members out for several reasons.
Firstly they were apparently extremely lax in their attitude to marriage and bureaucracy in general  :)
Secondly they were watermen and presumably moved around the river Severn area a lot.
And last but not least, I just can't find any online information for this area, even on the paying sites.

I've got lots of brick walls with this lot but I am hoping that a recent find might help break down one.  My 4 x great grandfather George Rowley was born around 1795 in Worcestershire.  Unfortunately he only appears on the 1841 census for Stourport (born in county) and dies in 1848.  I have never been able to find his baptism or parents.  Yesterday I was looking at later census records for his widow (who lived till 1894) and family and quite by chance I spotted that next door but one there was another family of Rowleys: Dan Rowley b. 1811 in Stourport, his wife and children, and Dan is also a waterman.  I have managed to track down Dan as marrying Elizabeth Rowley (sic) in 1832 and then as a widower marrying Sarah Morris in 1840.  It also looks like he was in the Merchant Navy for a while some time between 1845 and 1855.
I can't find a baptism for Dan either but I am hoping, possibly very optimistically, that he could be George's brother.
Does anyone have access to the parish records for this area who can find these baptisms or can give advice as where to search?  I would really be very grateful for any help.
Thanks in advance
Bev

If Dan had a marriage in 1840 then the certificate should give the name/occupation of his father.

I realise you don't know who the father of George was to compare but it might help.

1861 census for Dan gives birthplace Lower Mitton.

That's true.
I've been looking for the marriage cert. online but again, not even FindMyPast with their (so-called) coverage of Worcestershire brings anything up.
Do you know if the Navy records would have any personal information?
I might have to shell out on the 1840 marriage certificate, but it seems a waste of money if I don't have another father's name to compare it with.
Thank you
Bev

I don't know what info Navy records would have that might help but am sure someone here will know.

I agree seems a waste to get the marriage at the moment.

From what I can see, the parish records for Stourbridge (St. Thomas) are not available online.   I'm guessing they can only be viewed at Worcestershire Archives.

I will have a look at the parish records for the Kidderminster/Stourport area at the Hive in the next week.

You mention that George died in 1848.  I can't see a death on FreeBMD that matches  :-\

Kay

Interesting that a tree on Anc lists Dan Rowley as bapt  11 March 1812 at Lower Mitton with parents William and Elizabeth

You beat me to it Lisa  :)

Had a look at the parish records at the Hive this morning and found the  bapt Sept 18 1796 for  George Rowley in the former parish of Mitton which was incorporated into Stourport.

I also found a bapt for Mary Rowley 29 Oct 1794 in the parish with the same parents  and a possible marriage of  the parents 28 May 1792 at St Marys Kiddeminster - George Rowley to Ann Tattersall both single, made their mark and were from the parish

7 Dec 1840 marriage of Dan Rowley widower and waterman to Sarah Morris which lists his father  as William Rowley waterman and a witness was Patience Rowley

Thank you both very much!!!
What a shame that Dan and George are not brothers, but this is a big step forward (or backwards!) anyway.  I am really grateful, I don't live in England so I can't go on these expeditions myself.
Sorry, I made a mistake with the death of George, I think it was 1844, not 1848.  ::)

Many thanks again and I may well be bothering you in the future with more Rowley queries.  :)
