I am finding it difficult to sort these family members out for several reasons.
Firstly they were apparently extremely lax in their attitude to marriage and bureaucracy in general
Secondly they were watermen and presumably moved around the river Severn area a lot.
And last but not least, I just can't find any online information for this area, even on the paying sites.
I've got lots of brick walls with this lot but I am hoping that a recent find might help break down one. My 4 x great grandfather George Rowley was born around 1795 in Worcestershire. Unfortunately he only appears on the 1841 census for Stourport (born in county) and dies in 1848. I have never been able to find his baptism or parents. Yesterday I was looking at later census records for his widow (who lived till 1894) and family and quite by chance I spotted that next door but one there was another family of Rowleys: Dan Rowley b. 1811 in Stourport, his wife and children, and Dan is also a waterman. I have managed to track down Dan as marrying Elizabeth Rowley (sic) in 1832 and then as a widower marrying Sarah Morris in 1840. It also looks like he was in the Merchant Navy for a while some time between 1845 and 1855.
I can't find a baptism for Dan either but I am hoping, possibly very optimistically, that he could be George's brother.
Does anyone have access to the parish records for this area who can find these baptisms or can give advice as where to search? I would really be very grateful for any help.
Thanks in advance
Bev
