William Edward AUSTIN / AUSTEN in 1891
« on: Thursday 21 February 19 14:27 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone find either of these two, apparently separate, but possibly one and the same persons, in 1891?
Both have appeared in records as either AUSTIN or AUSTEN.

William Edward AUSTIN supposedly born 8 Nov 1869 Bow (1939 Register and census data), who marries Alice Maud CARTER in 1894 at Hagerston All Saints, saying he was a clerk, resident 70 Middleton Rd, son of engineer William AUSTIN.
A 12 yr old Wm AUSTEN was admitted to Cranbrook Rd school Tower Hamlets on 20 Jun 1882, the admission record showing him as born 8 Nov 1869, parent/guardian Wm AUSTEN Address 17 Grove Rd.
This being my only sighting prior to the 1894 marriage above.
William appears to have died in Sheffield in 1955.

William Edward Sinclair Fitz. AUSTEN birth registered 1869 Qtr 4, mother maiden surname BLAKE (GRO index - birth cert. on order)
Last sighting I have being 1881 census as an 11 year old living with parents William (railway servant goods department) and Sarah AUSTIN at 10 Selmen St, Mile End Old Town

William Edward Sinclair Fitz. AUSTEN birth registered 1896 Qtr 4, mother maiden surname BLAKE (GRO index - birth cert. on order)
Last sighting I have being 1881 census as an 11 year old living with parents William (railway servant goods department) and Sarah AUSTIN at 10 Selmen St, Mile End Old Town

I presume you mean 1869 rather than 1896 for this chap.

He had a twin sister, Ada Hannah Louisa Austen, mmn Blake, Dec qtr 1869 MEOT 1c 604.

As Ada Austin, 21, she was with parents William and Sarah in Donington Rd, Hackney in 1891: RG12/201/84/79.  Her brother William was not there.

Possible death: Ada Austin aged 24, Mar qtr 1895 Hackney?

thanks avm228
apologies for 1896/1869 typo - now corrected.

Yes WEFS Austin had a twin sister Ada.
In 1891  her place of birth is given as Bow, which sounds great - not that Mile End Old Town and Bow are far apart!

Their father William is also on WikiTree
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Austin-9878
She, and the 1891 census for William/Sarah/Ada, are shown there.
I'm gradually trying to pool my data from assorted sites (Ancestry / FamilySearch / FindMyPast) onto WikiTree, takes time :)
But there are so many gaps.
William and Sarah's marriage
Sightings of them prior to 1871....
I've not yet convinced myself where/when either of them died, and am also working on finding William's birth.

But the 1891 census(es) for the potentially identical Williams born 1869 would be a fairly good indication if there are one, or two, families here.

Regardless of whether or not an 1891 census for WEFS AUSTIN is definitively found I can now add that I've convinced myself that the two William Edwards are one and the same person.

The birth cert fo William Edward Sinclair Fitz AUSTEN shows he was born 8 Nov 1869 at 16 Regent St South, 3pm to William Mallars Fitz AUSTEN, porter, and Sarah Jane BIGGS formerly BLAKE. Informant mother S J AUSTEN, same address, registered 20th Dec

Whose marriage I'm now on a search for.
I can find her first marriage to Thomas Eden BIGGS

WikiTree has been updated to just the one person with notes on why:

Thanks Jennifer.
I've been updating the FamilySearch tree with my findings including Sarah's earlier family.

My interest is in Sarah's second "husband", William Mallams Fitz Austen or Austin
I'm working on a theory re William that DNA testing has led me to, but it is early days yet (ie I've not ruled in or out that the DNA match with a descendant of their son William Edward actually comes from that line of her ancestry).
Looking good, but so far inconclusive.

While working on narrowing down the DNA match to a line of her ancestry I continue to plug away at William in the records.

Firstly I needed to convince myself her William Edward was the 1869 William Edward Sinclair Fitz AUSTEN son of William Mallams Fitz AUSTEN and Sarah BIGGS formerly BLAKE.
That bit I've done.

Current mysteries:
1)William's (marr. to Sarah) life before the 1869 birth of William Edward Sinclair Fitz AUSTEN and his twin sister.
2)"Marriage" to Sarah BIGGS previously BLAKE.
3)Exactly how William is related to the "Aunt Hannah MALLARS" with them in the 1871 census.
4)Is Julia born 1864 and shown as a daughter in the 1871 census a clue? This is some years before William Edward and Ada and the year Sarah's husband Thomas Eden Biggs died?

1) he MIGHT be the chap in the LNWR railway records 1862 - "services not required after 34 yrs and 6 mths of service 3 Aug 1896 aged 67 & 7/12.
2) not yet found!
3) There is a MALLARS family around Lambeth at the right time but as yet I've not made any connection in the records to them for William.

I do so love a mystery, or three....
