Mystery place
« on: Friday 22 February 19 16:10 GMT (UK) »
I have a family of Patersons from the 19th century, most of them dying at a place called Saughtree, Dumfries.  The only place I can find on the 'Net of this name is a Guest House - which may or may not still be open (last reviews 2 years ago).  Did my family live at this house?  Or was there actually an area called Saughtree 'back in the day'?

If it's Dumfriesshire rather than the town, there's also Saughtrees in the parish of Wamphray:

Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

thank you for that.  All maps seem to point to the same place (inc. up-t0-date Google maps), which is - nowadays - this Saughtree Guest House, so I'm guessing that the Paterson family owned it then.  The gravestone does say Dumfries, rather than Dumfriesshire.  And Wamphray seems a long way away, considering they were all born around Holywood.  We are visiting Dumfries and will be staying within walking distance of the house, so I shall bimble along and have a look.  Who knows, I may be able to find something about previous owners?

Thanks very much for your help.

If the deaths were registered in the district of Dumfries, then it's the one in the district of Dumfries, and not one with the same name in any other district/parish.

If you want to find out about the owners, look in the Valuation Rolls at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

When you are in Dumfries, you could see if the library has copies of the registers of electors.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Sauch is the Scots word for a willow, so it is a common element in place-names.

Valuation roll for 1875 has John Paterson, occupier and proprietor of dwelling house and weaving shed, Saughtree, Annan Road, Dumfries.
1876 -77 gives James Paterson the proprietor, occupier  as above.
Robert Paterson is tenant, occupier of land at Saughtree 1917 - 1920.
There are a few houses/cottages under Saughtree, Annan Road, Dumfries thoughtout the years of the valuation rolls also a nursery and cricket field.
