And, given my background I need just to add that back in the day, artillery and engineer officers were not able to purchase their commissions, they were trained from 1741 at the Royal Military Academy Woolwich and earned their advancements by merit.

Short answer - yes!

The militia were part time soldiers who after initial training had to muster once a year. Bit of reading here when you have the time!   The musters you refer to are the record of men attending at the annual camp.

Ahh that is interesting thank you. I wondered why he appeared to only serve for a short time (in terms of records). He disappeared for about 15 years and he and Susannah 's children were born either side of this void so I wondered if he had been sent away but I guess not if it was a part time service. Thanks for the link, I will read that over the weekend :)
