Thomas Forsyth Newcastle Policeman 1816 to ?
« on: Thursday 28 February 19 07:47 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Forsyth held various law enforcement positions in Newcastle-upon-Tyne from 1815 to at least 1832 when he was seriously wounded while attempting to control a riot. I would like to know more about him if anyone has information. When he died would be very helpful.

What is the last census you have him on?  If he died from July 1837 onwards you will find the death entry on freebmd

www.freebmd.org.uk

You don't give any details of his birthyear or whether he was married etc

Thanks for getting back to me. Forsyth investigated the crime I am researching.

I don't know when he died. I've been tracking his career through the newspaper, but he has proved elusive, particularly after 1832 when he was seriously wounded. There is a Thomas Forsyth who was a corn inspector, but I am not sure it is the same man. Also, I have no account of him before 1816 when he became a Constable in Newcastle. It seems likely that he was involved in the Napoleonic Wars somehow, but again I haven't found him. I'm hoping he was such a unique individual that anyone who knows he was in their family can fill in the blanks.

History, Directory and Gazetteer of the Counties of Durham and Northumberland ........, published 1827, authors Wm. Parson and Wm. White.

"Forsyth Thomas - town marshall, corn inspector, and adjuster of weights and measures, superintendant of police, high constable and billet master; office Guildhall; h. Manor place"

Try googling "Thomas Forsyth, serjeant at mace" - couple of google books on line.

So he was the corn inspector! This is great thanks! I completely overlooked Mackenzie. This also means I have him in the 1851 Census and in the 1855 Directory - I didn't have the tie-in from policeman to corn inspector, but now I do thanks to you! Now I just need to check to see if he is the Forsyth that died in South Shields in 1858. Hopefully there is an obit and I can find out where he came from before 1816. Again, many thanks!

Thanks Trish! 33 seems a bit old to become a constable, though now I'm thinking I need to dig around before 1816 to see if anything comes up for him as a constable - I've done some of that from 1813 - 1815 with no luck.

ps I was reviewing my search for William Herdman you helped with last year - I still haven't found him but I think I will repost and see what turns up.

Thanks again.
