Conviction at Lancaster Liverpool Borough /Quarter Sessions 6 Feb 1843
« on: Saturday 02 March 19 05:54 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor Eliza Davies was sentenced to 7 years transportation for larceny at Lancaster Liverpool Borough /Quarter Sessions 6 Feb 1843, aged 16. I gather she had had 3 previous convictions for theft. Her Tasmanian convict records give no record of her parentage.
I have been advised by the Lancashire Archives Office that the following resources may give more information:
QJC/5 : Calendars of prisoners

QJI/1/216:  Indictment rolls

QSO/2/211: Court order books.

Does anyone have knowledge of these files and can comment if they may hold more personal information about Eliza.

I am finding if difficult to trace her parents. Apparently she bore a tattoo with initials "W.D. J.D. J.R, JR, E.D. Heart J.R on left Arm " and I am thinking that WD and JD may have been parents.

Any clues would be so very welcome.

Margaret

Her indent does tell you that she is a native of Liverpool, religion Church of England,  and she has a brother William who is a carter at Liverpool.

This search is likely to lead to Wales, so if you can’t find what you want in England Wales might be worth a look. (I don’t envy you though with “Davies” in Wales).  ::)

Have you looked for Eliza on the 1841 census?

Do you know if this person has been researched before on the Liverpool & SW Lancs FHS forum? There's been a few convict enquiries on there they can be difficult to research so want to make sure we don't duplicate any other research done already.

Thank you all for such prompt replies. I had not seen the reference to a brother William in Eliza's indent record and that is such a valuable clue. An initial brief  check of the 1841 census for Liverpool, suggests that William and Eliza were children of John and Elizabeth Davies. I will now look into the that link more closely. Perhaps my brickwall is not so high after all.

Warm regards

Looking at her age - I can only see 1 that matches for a baptism in Liverpool

Baptism: 26 Feb 1826 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Eliza Davies - [Child] of Job Davies & Mary
    Abode: Edmund Street
    Occupation: Officer in the Customs

Job Davies might be the J.D. on her arm ?
I am not saying it is your Eliza - just that it might be - so make a note of it - good luck  :)
added - if it is - Litherland is about 2 miles from St Peter church

Baptism: 20 Mar 1814 St Helen, Sefton, Lancashire, England
Job Davis - S of Thomas Davis & Mary
    Abode: Litherland
    Occupation: Gardener
plenty of  William Davies baptisms for parents William and Elizabeth at that period - but no Elizas
oakes,liverpool..neston..backford..poulton cum spittal(bebington)middlewich,cheshire......   sacht,helgoland  .......merrick,herefordshire adams,shropshire...tipping..ellis..  jones,garston,liverpool..hartley.dunham massey..barker. salford
