Don't know if it's of any relevance, but I have Ethel Bithell, b abt 1895, Hoole Cheshire dau, of Thomas Bithell & Harriet Henderson. her sister Bertha was married to my grandmother's brother.

Afraid I haven;'t got any other info except that there were several brothers & sisters.

Seems to be him arriving NY 1910.  Possibly in the company of John F Webster and William Roscoe.
All Painters.

So, where was he, (and Gertrude) in 1901?

Doing a bit of fiddling with the free index to the 1911 census, it looks as if Gertrude is with grandparents Samuel and Ellen in Wigan as Gretty Wain aged 14.

Hey guys, so many pieces of your information seem to be fitting together. The migration in 1910 to America alongside other Painters; Gertrude Ellen WAIN b.Sep qt. 1896 as being the daughter from Wilfred's marriage in June qt.1896 (not 1898 Jen so you got it right) to Ethel Bithell; death at age 20 of Ethell, presumably from child birth same quarter as birth of Gertrude Ellen; Gertrude living with paternal grandparents in 1911; marriage to Alice Keeley in Wisconsin would have been legal as he was a widower.

I can only presume that Alice Keeley was still alive when Wilfred returned to Wigan as that would seem to be the only bigamous marriage, unless she had died. I've never researched USA records for BMD but I did a quick look on FamilySearch and she didn't turn up there as dead.

I'm doubtful about the 1875 William WAIN who tried to get into the Canadian Forces. On Family Search the Alice WAIN that I found which matched had 2 children. But I can't find that page now and I didn't copy it.... :o Can't do any more here at the minute, work demands attention.

I shall return, OzzieJoan

The Canadian attestation papers for Wilfred Wain show his occupation as painter, birthdate 15 Jan 1875 “Wygan” - surely must be the same person.
