German Handwriting: would you really name your kid Knut Waldemar ?
« on: Monday 04 March 19 18:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi there
I'm stuck again!
Although the entry is really quite legible, I am not sure what the name of the boy is
Entry 16
 Knut Waldemar Alfred...or Alphons?
Kurt?
Paul?
Any clarity on the matter very appreciated, the rest of the entry I can read.
Many thanks
Rebel
PS Sorry the image isn't too sharp, it's not in the original either and I had to downsize anyway.

I see it as Paúl-Waldemar Alford.
Wiltshire:  Banks, Taylor
Somerset:  Duddridge, Richards, Barnard, Pillinger
Gloucestershire:  Barnard, Marsh, Crossman
Bristol:  Banks, Duddridge, Barnard
Down:  Ennis, McGee
Wicklow:  Chapman, Pepper
Wigtownshire:  Logan, Conning
Wisconsin:  Ennis, Chapman, Logan, Ware
Maine:  Ware, Mitchell, Tarr, Davis

Thanks for your response.
Yes, I find Paul much more likely but Alford sounds like the name of  a butler !
The surname is PLATH.
Paul Plath?
I'm trying to clarify the name in order to research the chap further.
I can't find another reference to him anywhere
Sigh...
Cheers

Could it be Alfreid rather than Alford?

hi JJ
yes, I think ALfred more likely...or Alfons? Alphons?
The more I look at an entry the harder it becomes.
Either I "get it" straight away or go roundin circles for days and then redort to Rootschat help.

Not Alphons.  The terminal letter is just like the terminal 'd' in Gottfried, further down the page.

Looks like Knut Waldemar [Alfred/Alford ] Pfath. I did wonder if it was Haut but the H/K is slightly different to a H that occurs on the page.

Paul Waldemar Alfred.

If you check Sütterlin you can see that he wrote some of the letters that way.

Regards Peonie

Added: should have said Kurrent Schrift.  Sütterlin came a bit later and mostly just changed the slanting of the letters.

I'd go for Paul-Waldemar Alfred.

To begin with, I thought it might be Raul, but that would not have been typical for Germany at that time. (Which, I suppose, wouldn't rule it out completely, though...)

I also wondered about Saul.

The first letter is not the same as the "P" in the surname (Plath).
Having said that, it's not the same as the "R" in "Recklinghausen", either. Or "Reichwein" in entry 17, come to that.
And it certainly doesn't look like the "S" in e.g "Sophie" in entry 19.

So I'd go for Paul, with the scribe being slightly inconsistent with letter formation.
Heaven knows I'm one to talk, as far as THAT is concerned..!  ;D

Best regards,
Karen
