william Cox married 1881 Witney oxon
« on: Wednesday 13 March 19 06:38 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find details of a marriage of William Cox to I believe a Mary Kearse in dec 1/4 1880 Vol;3a, Page;1317 in the Witney dist.

Try as I might, the only details I have been able to find,  is the IGI listing mentioned above. Nothing seems to show either on Anc..y, FreeReg, or FreeBMD, nor the actual registers on Ancy.

I think William was a widower as I have his wife Sarah Jane Launchbury being buried aged 28 in Brize Norton 3-3-1880.

He is only a twig on my tree but I'm trying to complete the details. I've looked in Brize Norton transcripts and have drwan a blank there.

Can anyone help, please

Try 1881 instead, all other details as you've said ;)

Ah well, after a good start in finding the GRO entry I've failed to find William's marriage in CofE or Non-conformist records.

It wasn't uncommon for widowed people to have their second weddings at the Register Office, in which case of course the details won't be online.  Sorry, that's the best I can do :(

Thanks Carol - you've confirmed what I was finding.

I suspect you are right in that it may have been a registry office marriage.

Unfortunately, I can't find an  OxfordBMD site that may have registry marriages.

Alan, I don't think Register Office books are available for public viewing at all, but I'd be delighted to be proved wrong :-\

You could try an email to help[at]ofhs.org.uk and ask Wendy for a definitive answer?

Thank you all for your help.
The article found by "youngtug" supplies more info than I thought possible - brilliant.

The only item missing is where did they marry. I know it says Witney but having looked at the original church marriage registers nothing appears, which brings us back to a possible registry office wedding.

I'll try the OFHS to see if they can come up with some info (suggested by Carol).

I have many instancies where dates & locations are missing  and I hate seeing vacant spaces in my Family Tree software.

Many thanks once again.
