Guildhall Bath
« on: Wednesday 13 March 19 20:42 GMT (UK) »
My elderley aunt has informed me that her uncle was a plasterer in Bath during 1850 to 1900.
She said that he did all the fancy ornate plasterwork inside the Guildhall. Apparently he was quite famous!
Can anyone help in trying to trace his name.
Thank you

Hi and a warm welcome to Rootschat

Forgive me if I am a bit slow - are you saying that your Aunt doesn't know her uncle's name?  Or are you saying you do know it, and want us to look for more on him, in which case you need to tell us his name!
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Welcome to Rootschat

Your last line asks us to help trace his name.  How can we do that without knowing anything about him?

Perhaps a starting point would be to contact the Guildhall and ask if they have any history of who did their fancy plasterwork?

From Google

Do any of the names ring any bells?

I am doing research on the Fletcher family who were plasterers in bath circa
1860 to 1900.
I was talking to an aunt who just dropped this into the conversation. I thought they did house jobs but now wondering if they did more unusual jobs.
I was wondering where I could get more information.
Thank you

The Guildhall houses Bath archives I believe.  Why not email them?

Presumably tracing back your aunt’s family tree would help identify candidates?  Does she have no idea at all about what his name was?

If he was working in a skilled craft by 1850 I’d think he’s likely to be a more distant relative than an uncle of a person still living in 2019.

Hayward and Wooster were one of the main Building Contractors in Bath at the time of the Guildhall extension in 1893. Sadly. like many others since, they have disappeared;H & W around 1975 I believe. The City Archivist may have records of the company and its employees on that Guildhall contract.
