Ballinasloe Lunatic asylum Mary Rowland 1859
« on: Friday 15 March 19 15:42 GMT (UK) »
In the Petty Sessions for Castlebar 7 September 1859 the following entry occurs:

Petty Sessions Court Castlebar. Complaint by William Rowland that his daughter Mary "Acting for some time as if she was of unsound mind and assaulting her brothers Michael and John Rowland" " Ordered to be committed as a dangerous lunatic"
The address for the Complainant was Bracklagh Glenhest, Newport Co Mayo
Mary was my gg grand aunt.
As Castlebar did not have an institution until 1860s I am told that Ballinasloe would have been the place where Mary would have been confined. Her father William was married to Margaret Corrigan and he died in 1877. Any suggestions of where to research would be appreciated

Hi, This might be a late reply but you can write first to the Irish National Archives who hold some of the records for Ballinasloe Mental Hospital.

Also they might refer you on then to the HSE (which is Ireland's health service). You might have to provide a bill and photo ID to them before they will send on any records they have. There is a policy of destroying records for patients with a mental health disorder 8 years after the patient's death.

In other counties, such records are still in the possession of the county council. Is there any reason why Galway would be any different?
